$1000 upgrade.

Tek light is used? Make sure all is working. I just got two with a system I bought, both 6 bulb units. Need 12 bulbs and one ballast in each light. That's makes them cost me 240 in bulbs plus the ballast. You have 120 in bulbs, so figure that in. Don't use the bulbs you would get, never know how old they are.

Now if you want led I have to agree with Kessil for the shimmer! Just gorgeous.

1000 isn't much in this hobby, but it can go along way if you shop smart.

If you're wanting to stay with mostly softies and Lps corals...
I would get the reef breeders photon 36
2xjaebo rw8 pumps
And the rest on fish and coral.

Lighting is my main concern I guess, I am only gonna be able to get one crack at doing it right. Mostly I do want LPS and softies, but I like a couple SPS as well.

Will the photon light grow sps?

If cost is a factor then look into reef radiance dm165e or even the ocean revive t247 both grow sps very well

Im using this rodi / skimmer on my 40b. I'm vodka dosing and this skimmer is still overkill for my tank. I'm happy with my rodi unit as well I have a similar light but with 4 t5s just for taste.

I don't think I'm going to upgrade my skimmer, I already use a big bad eshopps snow cone skimmer that can handle a much bigger display down the road or the addition of a stocked frag tank. As for the return pump, I'm interested in the DC pump, but I'm worried about reliability. My mag3 is well over 5 years old and still pumping strong, its getting quite noisy though. I like the lower flow rate through the sump because I think it gives the sump equipment more time to work. As for the RODI unit, I was definitely going to use that BRS model, I buy a lot of gallons of distilled water from walmart and consider $150 to be a no brainer, really the only fish tool that truly cuts the cost of reef keeping. I really wish I could see someone's jebao rw8 pumps next to a ruler. My cheapo hydors will really move some water, but they are HUGE! I've finally got them in areas that is not so unsightly, however one of them is mere inches from a shelf that I want to put some type of sps.

Lighting is really my biggest problem, I don't want to buy a Chinese light that will burn out in three months and god knows what kind of support I will get, the reef breeder unit has sparked a bit of curiosity in me. I am unable to navigate their website for some reason on my windows phone. Now I know that as far as lighting I concerned could grow ANYTHING under 6 bulbs of T5HO power, but as everyone knows every reefer is always thinking about the future. My next tank will likely be a 93 cube so a 24" light would be great.

Here is me skimmer after my little helper cleaned it w/ me before the initial build. Reef princesses helping with sump build

I have the waveline dc pump and love it. This pump is awsome and highly recommend it. Dc10000.only cost me 240.i could have gotten the jebao but heard of doa pumps and low water sensors going bad. Good luck

If looking at led the Ocean Revive t247 is only $148 shipped. The reef radiance dm165e is 170-180 shipped. Both will work on your tank fine

You could put two photon 32 units over your tank. Not necessary but just saying there's really no such thing as "too much" when I comes to dimmable led. The ideal led setup is to have the LEDs cover the entire footprint of the tank if you wanted sps from end to end. Most folks don't do that because it's cost prohibitive, but because you can dim them so low, there's really no such thing as too much. Too few on the other hand...definitely an issue most people struggle with

I have used the OR-T247 on a full blown sps reef. Corals did really well and I never had the light above 40% intensity (25% blue/15% whites) and the light was hung about 7" above the tank. Even had sps and clams growing on the sand bed 25" down.

In my opinion it is a great bargain led. It looks pretty sharp hung over the tank (its a pretty sleek fixture) and it was always cool to the touch.

My tank under the OR-T247

I would definitely use them again in the future and I currently use a kessil and reefbrite halide/led combo pendant. For the price point they are pretty dang good.
