I can get my hands on a 100g tank for free! My concern is I was originally thinking a reef tank. This tank isn't drilled and I think id just do live rock only with HOB filters. Is this tank to big for that?

It could work fine with just hob filters but i suggest taking it to a glass shop and having it drilled if possible or getting a hang on back overflow. A sump with a skimmer and refugium would give you less Maintenance than you would have to do with the hob filters. Or even canister filters over the hobs if you can clean them regularly.

I agree.....after having both setups, I will never do a "large" saltwater tank again without a sump. Along with making maintenance much easier, you also get the added benefits of being able to hide your equipment and having the extra water volume.

Alright so sump it is. How big should my sump be? Any recommendations for a DIY sump build instructions or just buy one

My advice is always to go as big as possible (no smaller than a 20 gallon). You want to make sure you have plenty of room for your skimmer, heaters, probes, return pump, etc. I unfortunately don't have any instructions for a DIY sump (I bought a Trigger Systems sump) but there are a ton on the interwebs. While most people prefer to make their own, I like the looks of a pre-built, acrylic sump.

Yeah I'd do the biggest tank possible that fits in your stand. I made a sump for mine just go to an acrylic or glass shop with the tank you plan in using and look up some diy sump plans online and have them cut them to size. The. You just silicone them in place and your good. I did a terrible silicone job on mine and the side of my refugium near the return pump came off. Use a lot of silicone lol
