Hi everyone!!

quick noobish question for everyone about flow & flow patterns.

I have a 10g - here is my tank thread w/ pics

so my question is - for a mixed tank - can anyone suggest some flow patterns, powerhead placement or anything that they have done well with? keeping in mind my scape...

here is a FTS:

The front of the tank has decent flow (i think), but behind rocks, top water layer and probably some places i cant see have low flow/deadzones. On top of that, i had the acan frag in a high-direct flow area (i think a polyp died :()

current flow from HOB filters both flowing in from the back corners
AC20 (100 gph)
finnex PF5 (31gph)

Koralia Nano 240 gph is in the mail on its way, hope to have it in by friday.

my main concern is getting the flow right! Do i just simply not have enough flow right now?? Some of the corals look great but the acan is looking sorry... Ricordia also not looking awesome...

i always read you can never have TOO MUCH flow - but in certain spots now - it seems high (along the front , near the sand bed).

Any suggestions on getting flow correct for a rectangular 10g?

PS - sorry if this is covered in another area or multiple threads - if so - post links to them?

Acans don't like a lot of flow. There certainly is a point where you can have too much flow. You certainly don't want to blow sand all over the tank. The key is random chaotic flow IMO. I think once you add that Koralia you should be pretty good.

The Koralia nano 240 is VERY little flow. Even in a 10 gallon it's not much. I'd point it towards the HOB filters or perpendicular to break up the laminar flow.

I thought so! I'd had issues in a 4g with sand blowing all over so I had been worried about it in the 10g...

I cant believe i got that wrong....i spend sooooo much time researching (at work now lol) i hope i corrected before i lost the whole frag...

do you think i should order a 2nd nano? or the larger 400(?)gph koralia? I was hoping the 240 + the 2 HOBs would provide enough flow.

My initial placement idea was to put it in the back right corner (on the short side) pointed UP and LEFT - so it would shoot across both HOB flows and maybe break surface tension for oxygenation(?)

I have cyano problems on my sand bed - hoping the added flow alleviates the issue a bit.

here is a pic with my horrible attempt to show the flow lol

red line = existing flow from HOBs (left is 100, right is 31 GPH)
yellow/red dot = intended Koralia 240 placement
yellow lines = flow from koralia

what do you guys think?

I'd put your K Nanos at each end and point them towards each other. You will really just have to play around with them and figure out what works best for your tank.
