Is it possible to run a 10g nano reef on an internal cannister filter with sponges and bio media inside and a skimmer? Using a fluidised bed bio filter at moment but think its about to pack in and was thinking of switching to an internal cannister

Not exactly sure what you mean by internal canister filter, but it would probably work. If by internal you mean it's in the tank, I would be more inclined to run a HOB filter like an aquaclear AC70 or AC100. A 10 gallon tank fills up pretty quick. With some minor mods you can turn either one into a nice little refugium.

I don't see why it wouldn't work but you will need to add some more flow too. Like a hydor nano or jebao wp 10. The other thiing is you have to be very diligent about keeping the sponges clean they can produce a lot of nitrate.

Yeah i am getting the wp10 in a few weeks.i am very aware of the nitrates i pride myself at keeping them at zero :)

Be careful with a wp10 in a small nano I use one on a 30 shallow reef 24x24 and it's powerful as heck

I'm using a wp10 in an 8g pico and yes the flow is crazy.
To tame it down, I changed the power supply from 24volts 1 amp to 12 volts 1 amp.
It decreased the flow into half and still all the controller functions work!!! And my coarse gravel bed is happy.

On a diff note: why would you need a canister filter with sponges and bio medias?
You don't need those. All you need is enoughy live rock, abt a pound a gallon, a live sand and good flow.
If you want to use media use this media: MarinePure sphere bio filter..... It's basically porous ceramic balls that work like live rock!!
That's my 2 cents

You may not even need a skimmer!

All you Do need is:
diligent top off (replacement ) of evaporated water atleast daily.
And a cup to a pint of salt water change daily.

So, live rocks, live sand, flow, those water changes, light, temperature control is all you need to run a successful nano.

IF YOU HAD TO TAKE A REEFING EXAM, WOULD YOU PASS?
