Is this a normal reading 12 hours in?

There is not a normal ammonia level for any give time frame but having an ammonia reading like that in 12 hrs is fast.. What did you add to start the cycle?

You don’t want the ammonia to get to high it will stall the cycle so you may need to do some small water changes to keep it under .50

It's not cycling. It's just curing dry rock. Hope I said that correct. Is it ok for curing only? Or cooking maybe is what I'm trying to say.

Oh.. thought you meant cycle, no need to test levels while your curing it’s meaningless

Guess you see I'm brandy new so dumb question if I don't test how do I know when cure is done? Or you mean testing so quick is useless.

Not dumb questions.. Curing is a process to clean the rock up and git rid of organic matter, you typically would do this in buckets or a trash cans full of water with lots of water changes over a few week period, you can do some searching here on the forum for methods people use to cure different kinds of rock.. once rock is clean you can put it in your tank and add something to start the cycle then start your testing.

Thanks so much! I have in bucket but added a small piece of live rock from store tank. Not sure if that will help it along but figured it wouldn't hurt. Also have heater and pump in bucket.
