Hey all. I am currently cycling a 120 gallon 4' x 2' x 2'. I am trying to develop a fish plan with lots of active swimmers. This is what is in my mind so far but would love some suggestions. I have a 152s Reef Octopus. Radions. Mp40's.
Fish Plan - 62”

  1. Yellow Tang - 8”
  2. Blue Hippo Tang - 12”
  3. Naso Tang - 15”
  4. Clown Fish - 7” (pair)
  5. Royal Gramma - 3”
  6. 11 Fish School of Green Chromis - 22” (11 Fish)
Any help is welcome!

120 is a good size with a good footprint. You have a lot of options.

Will it be a reef?

Unfortunately, the hippo and any Naso would need a bigger tank. The Naso, probably an 8' tank, and the hippo somewhere in the standard 180- standard 240 gallon.

A group of chromis may work, but a lot of folks end up disappointed with them. They tend to form a hierarchy and pick each other off.

Look into:
Fairy wrasses
Flasher wrasses
Halichoeres wrasses
Basslets like gramma, black cap, chalk bass
Longnosed or flame hawk
Dwarf angel
Gobies
Blennies
Dartfish

If it's not a reef, look into dwarf angels and smaller butterflies to replace the huge tangs. Many folks have success with dwarf angels in reefs as well.

In my opinion, your stocking list is fine minus the naso. Those things get huge. Forget 15”, they have the potential of getting 20”! When full grown, they can barely turn around in a 120. I’d say a 180 would be the minimum for a JUVENILE! I just purchased one for my 180 and I will have to give it away someday. Luckily my LFS buddy has a 5,000 display waiting for it!

PS.... I just saw that this is a 4’ tank.... the hippo will also not work if this is the case.... Any tangs of the genus Naso, Paracantherus (Blue Hippo), and Prionurus require a 6” tank or bigger (naso probably better 8’-10’). Most acantherus tangs will also need a 6’ or longer tank. For tangs in a 4’ tank, look into the Ctenochaetus tangs (Tomini or Kole) and most of the Zebrasoma tangs (not the sail-fins)
