120 peninsula build

I used a Synergy Ghost overflow, and the return line is through a 1" SeaSwirl. Sump and refugium are in the basement below.
Oh nice i would like to do one like this.

How many power heads do you have?

Currently I'm using two Hydor Koralias hooked up to their small wavemaker. I plan on maybe switching them out at some point for a couple Tunze. But before that I plan on trying out the new Tunze Stream 3 that I won here, and just the SeaSwirl to see what kind of flow I can produce. Not sure when that new pump is going to be released but I hope soon, I can't wait to try it out. If I don't like it I will probably try and sell it and get a new Gyre.

OK, cool. I just read through your entire build thread. WOW! you're quite a good designer. I have the ghost overflow and love it as well. My next upgrade will be a 120 so this thread caught my eye. I'm very impressed w/ your DIY sump. did you get any test kits? What are your plans for supplementing alk, calc, and mag?

BEAUTIFUL BUILD!!!

Wow thanks for the very generous compliment John. Glad you finally made it through the whole thread. The sump design was inspired by www.gmacreef.com, and some of the really nice and very expensive acrylic sumps on the market. I have not yet purchased any test kits but that's going to have to happen soon. Probably going to go with Hanna Checkers for Alk, and Phosphate, and RedSea for Nitrate, and PH. I may not even test PH, but since my sump is in the basement along with the oil furnace and a few small windows I probably should monitor it for a while to make sure it's stable. As for supplementing I'm going to use AquaForest components 1+,2+3+ and see how long that lasts. On Salty Supply you get all three supplements premixed and ready to go for $49.99. If demand outweighs the cost than I will buy the raw ingredients(also aquaforest) and mix my own. Nice to have you along for my build, and glad I could offer some inspiration. Stay tuned for updates! Par reading on the Orphek lights is coming up next week!

Good deal. I have switched over to the AF reef salt and like it very much. I have the components from them also, but need some wiggle room in our budget to get my dosing system. My friend @jsker is full blown AF and might be able to help you when it comes to dosing. The Orpheks are much talked about w/ little first hand experience here in the US. If you like, join us in our lighting comparison thread and tell us what you like about the Orpheks!

also @jsker says you can save 50% by mixing the raw materials for the components yourself. Have a great evening and I look forward to seeing things come along!

Yes mixing you own 1+2+3+ will save a great deal.

I thought I recognized your little cow fish avatar from somewhere. I've been following that AF thread, and while I was trying to decide on lighting your lighting thread. I will join in on the comparison thread once I have my PAR readings mapped out.

Thanks @jsker, I will take it into consideration once the demand starts to go up for sure. Thanks for chiming in, and for all your posts on the AF thread!

The recipe for 1+2+3+ is over on the AF threads. I you need the recipe I have it also and I will post it if you need it.

No real updates on the tank. The two fire fish are doing well. Eating like little pigs. We did name them... Fili, and Kili. The Stylophora is also doing great looks to be growing and has some crazy phosphorescence under the UV channel. Need to get some test kits still, AF reef salt, and the 3 part supplements. Money is tight as the baby is coming in 8 weeks. Moved the entry from the garage this weekend. That was a pregnant mama's must have before the big day. Here are some cool photos my brother in law took.

LFS Tech came by last night to do my par readings. My lights are 12" above the waterline. Tank is 48"x24"x24". So at the surface I'm in the high 400s. Top of islands in the 300s, sand bed 150-200 depending on shading. That's at 100% intensity on all channels. I'm pretty pleased with how the Orphek lights are performing. I did think for the money the par readings would be higher. However I do believe that readings in the 600-700 range are a waste of electricity. So I'm going to lower the lights to about 10" above the waterline and turn the intensity down to about 80%, then listen to my livestock to determine if they need my light or not.

Thanks @Azarus, hopefully over the next couple months I will actually be able to get some more livestock in there. With the baby coming in a month and a half my efforts are being diverted to other places. This is going to be a slow stocking regime, which is probably the best thing for the systems longevity anyway. Thanks for joining in on my build!

Called the LFS this morning to see if they had any Trochus Snails which they did. So I picked up a couple.

I also asked if they would put a cheap SPS pack together for me. They said sure and gave me 4 frags for $20! I got a small Birds Nest, think it's an emerald green one.

Two Acros, don't know the names.

And this one the guy said he thought was a smooth skinned Acro. I think he said that it has blue polyps but not sure. I have no idea what it is. It looks a little like a Heliopora to me but I'm not sure. Any guesses?

Your LFS seems pretty cool. Mine sells frags of xenia for $30, lol
