125 gallon beginner build

Putting together quarantine tank. Son had to have the spongebob decoration. Sponge filter is en route with amonia checker. It came with hang on back filter. Should i also use that?

I like using hob filters because I can keep a couple spare sponges for them in my sump. Then I can get it going right away

Should i run a sponge filter in the bath the rock sits in?

I would just add flow and some heat. In RO/DI water for a couple of weeks and see if you are generating high Nitrates or Phosphates.

That pukani is known to hold and leach phosphate and organics. No filter needed, just test for phosphate. If it's leaching out, you'll have to just change the water it's in periodically till the P04 has bottomed out.

I have pukani and know a few others and we all ay some time had very high nitrates phosphates and Dino’s with tank set up with that rock. I suggest you cure it a very long time. Not to scare you but my tank has been set up five years and I cured the rock for three months changing the water twice a week and ended up with tank disaster. Took about four years to get things stable and I still battle high nitrates. Keep an eye on the two and test often.

Wow that is scary. Has me considering different rock.

What if i go to my lfs and get 60lbs of live rock. Would i be able to add to tank immediately along with say 15lbs of the pukani dry rock?

So I have been taking out the pukani rock every day after work and hosing it down with pressure hose and refilling with fresh ro/di water. Last night I added 1 cup of "phosfree" to the 32 gallon brute that the pukani rock is soaking in. Phosfree is lanthanum chloride. Is this recommended? Is this harmful?

My dry pukani has been soaking in ro/di bath for the week and I have been removing and spraying down all of the rock every evening and putting in fresh ro/di water. I don't know how much longer I can wait. I think tomorrow I am going to my lfs to get 60lbs of live rock and add in the 40lbs of dry pukani and dry sand tomorrow into the tank and fill up with salt water.

I have never used lanthanum chloride, but it seems from my reading to be a very popular choice for binding Phosphate.
