Hello everyone,
New here and starting my first build! Just wanted to start off by saying thanks for all the invaluable information that members have unknowingly bestowed upon me as I’ve been silently stalking threads on here. And thanks in advance to everyone who contributes to this thread.

So here we go! As the title says it will be 125g glass aquarium with another 125g sump/refugium. Ya know the standard 72”x18”23” ones.

The display tank will be sitting in between two rooms so I drilled through the side three 1-1/2” holes (to minimize visual obstructions) in preparation for a shadow box over flow.

The over flow will feed into an external section where a bean animal type over flow will be installed all 1-1/2” pvc.

From the overflow the water will feed down through some mechanical filtration (most likely a sock) and into the first section with a protein skimmer.
*I’m thinking of building my own skimmer so keep an eye out for that thread!

After the skimmer I’m thinking of having a large refugium possibly 40” in length. does this make sense? The bigger the better right?
The last section will house the return pump, ato, heaters, and any other equipment
(dosing pumps, reactors, monitoring probes, etc) that will be added in the future.

The water will return from it’s journey through a 1-1/2” pvc and enter the tank via three 1/2 dual flow lock line outlets... not sure if I worded that properly so see pictures for clarification.

I will follow up this post with more information and pictures as the build progresses.
Please comment and post any questions or suggestions I’m sure it’ll help since I’m not really sure what I’m doing here.

Next post will probably be future plans and I will need a lot of help and information when it comes to that. so stay tuned.

Thanks again and happy reefing

Welcome to reef2reef! Glad you joined us!

I have the same tanks for DT and sump. You can check out my build here:

The only thing I see is your returns/loc-line needs to exit at the waterline so it will break syphon when the power goes off, instead of so low in the tank.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your build!

Yes I’m aware, I’ll have one of each pair at the surface to break the siphon. Thanks!! Will check out your build for sure

Update:

Just got some glass cut for the sump and over flow box ... the people were just great at my local shower glass place. They had this awesome macaw in the front of the store greeting people, I told them an aquarium would be better.

4 baffles for the sump, 3 pieces for the over flow and 2 for the shadow box Everything cost me about $45. I even measured a piece wrong and they recut it for free!

Also picked up 2 tubes of silicone I read this GE 100% silicone was okay... any thoughts??

Once I get these all siliconed up I think I’ll start a few other projects

DIY reef light

DIY protein skimmer

Aquarium controller

Can someone recommend some links ?

I’ve already researched a ton but I would love to read more.

Thanks in advance
