Why not get the 20g get a fiji cube AIO insert and lessen the need for a upgrade ? Get a simple 10g from wal-mart for a QT tank with a aquaclear filter,heater and maybe a small power head (sicce .5 $25) for extra flow ?

I just don't see why people spend the money on small tanks getting into the hobby then eventually upgrade. Go bigger,less room for quick changing water parameters,getting too big of fish that need more water volume than the small tiny tank they put them into.

Make it easy on yourself. 20g is a good volume to start at I feel like for new people. I started with a 10g then went smaller once I learned how to control parameters. Now all I keep is pico's,because they are a challenge.

I have one been in the hobby for 12yrs so take my advice with a grain of salt !!!

I think the 13.5 will take a lot of the difficulty out of the tank’s setup but mabye I should just gut the tank. If anything, my hob would be strong enough but I’m not sure. I really like the dimensions of the 13.5 and it’s a lot cheaper

If you like scorps, look at coral croucher. Only 2 inches.
Also for a Caribbean biotope, royal gramma is a popular choice for this tank and is one of the most beautiful fish available.
Neon goby is another good Caribbean fish and will help to keep parasites off of your other fish.

it very well might be. I was all, I need the bestest RoDI a year ago. Didn’t understand tds or anything. Family member asked what I wanted for my birthday. Obviously 7 stage RoDI from BRS is the bestest because it has 7.....

Now? I know how to figure out water quality. 7 stages is probably overkill. But it was a gift and I’m trying to save money soo. Might as well use it right?

Free is free and I love my 3 stage di from brs I've probably burned 6-700 gallons of good water since I set it up with this pentek prefilter and I've only burned through a quarter of anion di. Doesn't even look like cation and mix bed have been phased.
Defientely get membrane flush kit.
I let my membrane flush for 5-10 minutes now down to about 3-6 tds and then run through the 3 stage di.

I think this would work best because my mom is not a social person at any stretch so IMO it would probably just be she’d buy and get it.

I wouldn't be dishonest with your mom.
Tell her the truth. You found a really awesome family reefing site and members want to donate gear to your cause. Thats where id start. I'm sure we can get staff to make it happen. They do stuff like that all the time.
