I recently purchased an acrylic tank 40x36x25 (150ish gallons) second hand. Previous owner bought the tank and never used it.

The tank has a center overflow with what appears to be a hole for a 1” bulkhead and a hole for a 3/4” bulkhead. I am struggling to see the best way to plumb this tank. I do not feel comfortable with a single 1” Durso drain.

Will the single 3/4” return flow 500-600 gph?

If so, does it make sense to drill an additional hole for a 1” or larger bulkhead and run a Herbie style system? 1” drain at full siphon with a gate valve, 1” larger drain with standpipe as emergency, Andy the 3/4” as the return?

If it were me, I'd either drill a new return hole and use the 2 existing as drains, or probably drill a new return hole and see if I could get another drain in there as well. I'm personally a fan on the BeanAnimal set up.

I do not believe I will be able to get more than one additional bulkhead in that space.

I would bore both holes out to make two 1 1/2" drains for a herbie setup then drill a 1" return somewhere in the back of the tank. Or dual 3/4" returns one on each side.

How about this?

1” full siphon, 1.5” emergency and the 3/4” return.

This look acceptable?
