My newest reef project is getting close! After using pure ammonia to dose and cycle the tank I can finally say the cycle is done. I’m going to start building the canopy this weekend for the lights. I have about 140lbs of cured rock in it and I’ll put my PBT in there in a week or so once I’m sure the tank has stabilized, I’m hoping to start moving some of my hardier coral in by April/May. Ugh I need a dose of patience!!!! One day at a time I guess.

I’ll follow your thread as I’m starting my tank also. I have some extra pumps laying around if you need flow. Can’t tell what you have in there.

Right now I just have a large Hydor for circulation. I’m in the market for a wavemaker as we speak. I just used the hydor during the cycle. What pumps do you have laying around?

Here is my soon to be canopy under construction, nothing special but nonetheless it will function well. I’m working on the top now and the light fixtures.

How exciting! Interesting tank shape. What are the dimensions?

I think canopies, even simple ones, look better than the open top look where you see the lights, water level, bracing, etc.

Keep in mind that the pbt, if added first, might not take kindly to future additions, especially deep bodied fishes.

The tank is 40’x33’x30’ tall and my PBT has always been pretty relaxed when it comes to other fish but I don’t plan on adding a lot of fish to this tank. I’m going to try to make it a heavy SPS reef with him and maybe a couple clowns and a wrasse/goby.

I know 40’ isn’t ideal for a PBT but I have the tank set up so he has plenty of room front to back, circular , etc.

The canopy is finished and now the tank is ready for some life!!!! My wife sanded and stained it and likes it so much she’s going to take the white trim off the stand and do the same.

I am seriously considering putting on top aluminum trim that has been powder coated on my cube with an acrylic splash guard and then a floating canopy.

In that pic yours almost looks floating so it is making me lean towards it.

Who was the Tank builder?

I’m not sure who the builder is, I bought this off of craigslist but it’s pretty obvious by the beveled edges and oversized acrylic it’s not a typical tank.
