Hello everyone,

Whats the best means to lower mag? I have tried 20-30% water change weekly. My mag has been 1,600-1,700 for about 5-6 weeks. I have a 120 gallon tank.

Salinity 8.4
Alk is 1.025 - Hanna
Calcium 465 - Hanna
point of sale .02 - Hanna
PH around 8.3 -Salifert
Nitrates 5 -10 - Red Sea

Thank you,

What salt are you using?
Is this something new in an established tank or has it built up over time?

I forever had high Mag like that in my 20 gallon its going on 3 years old and can't remember the last time I checked Mag. I never really noticed any ill effects from it so I didn't worry about chasing numbers because the tank seemed fine. I know that's probably not what you want to hear, but if the tank is good I wouldn't worry too much about it!

Hi,

I'm using Tropic Marine Pro Reef. My tank is about 2 years old. It is something pretty new 5-6 or so weeks. Prior to this, I use to have problems with it being too low and having to dose.

Thank you,

don't do any thing. or you can use salt with lower parameters and water change till Mag. decreased.

Only 2 ways it's going to get that high.....

You dosed it up to that level, or your new salt mix is mixing up super high. Test your new salt water mix.

No real issue with it that high, IMO. We used to raise it that high to combat bryopsis with a certain MAG product. No one ver had an issue even up to 1800.

Same issue here. My tank is a few years old, I have never dosed it, have a decent amount of coral, use reef crystals and have never been able to get it reduced. I go through brs two part monthly but no mg. Seems like there are no ill effects however

What test kit do you use for your Mg?

I ran there for years without issue, I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve seen bad things happen when it’s low, but never due to too high.

I also had unmeasurable high magnesium. To much of anything is a bad thing . I did a water change with reef crystals and this is what it did .
But just today I did a large 40-45 % water change, with Red Sea blue bucket salt mix. And the magnesium came down to 1500 and calcium came down to 440 and the alkalinity is 8.4 . So I’m relieved. I don’t like very big water changes they can stress corals. But if you’re magnesium is rediculuos then a big water change with a salt mix that suits your needs is all you can do .
