The light has dimmers, so the height has no impact. The height is set at how ever high you need to go so the light covers the entire bottom of your tank. Then adjust the intensity with the dimmers.

I have two Vipar Spectras at about 10.5 inches off the water.. that seems to cover my 100G well... Whatever gives you the best coverage is probably the way to roll.
