Hello I have a simple question. I have an 180g tank and was wondering will a 40 gallon sump suffice for the tank? I will be building the sump myself and already have a 40 gallon in garage so that’s why I ask. Thanks

40 gal is fine. I have a 30 gal. sump with a 20 gal refugium under my 180. Bigger is better but keep in mind that you will likely want space for equipment also.

You don't need a sump at all. They are just nice because you can keep things out of the display tank and don't have a bunch of HOB equipment.

So the real question isn't about the display gallons, it's about what equipment and things you want to put in them.

40g is probably what I would get for a DYI. I have a new 40g in my garage that I planned to use for a sump, but then I ended up ordering a tank that came with a 50g sump, so didn't use it.
