Hey guys. Looking between these two tanks. Plan is to build out my current 125 stand wider and add extra supports. Just want yalls opinion as far as weight on the floor. Both tanks are the same dimensions, the 225 is just taller. Website lists both tanks as 158 pounds as they are acrylic. Biggest question is which one is safer as far as water weight, stocked with sand and live rock? Will want a structural engineer to look at the floor before doing anything but I just was going to see if anyone here ad any advice? Tank is currently on the 1st floor, open basement below

Dimensions of each?

I assume 180G is 72x24x24, but 225G can be 96 or 72. That makes a difference, as longer is always better than width or height in terms of weight distribution.

Here are the dimensions. I would love a 96 inch reef but with space I could maybe do 8 max, but would need a new stand and thats what I dont have the money for since it adds like another 3k onto it.

Saltwater weighs 8.57lb per gallon; so the 225G will weigh 2000lbs in just water. Add the rock, stand, aquarium, etc.

Nobody can answer you question except a structural engineer in-person.

But make sure the aquarium is on a load-bearing wall(s) and perpendicular to the joists.

My current tank is on both of these luckily! I really want that 225 but thats a lot of weight. Ill see if I can get one out, none of the ones I contacted will come out to look

Are you able to position supports in the basement, under where the tank would be?
I should be able too yes, its just a rental so Im extra paranoid

What do you think about this tank? As far as adding the 2 feet to span more joists for the weight

Im thinking about the 96 vs 72 to cover more joists and cause the fish would like that better!

Spreading weight over more joists is always better than concentrating it over fewer joists; but please consult with an engineer.

I will ask my cousin who is in construction, I cant find an engineer willing to come out to assess for whatever reason. Ill probably just add bracing anyway to be safe but Ill keep looking for an engineer willing to come out and look
