180G 6' on carpet tack strip question

I have read numerous articles saying DON'T put an aquarium on a carpet tack strip. Mainly because it doesn't compress, where the other side does.

What I am wondering, is for a new install, would shims compensate for the tack strip?

That extra inch in placement does make a difference to my layout.

180G 72"x 24" x 24" .. Will be open on 3 sides. The tack strip would run all the way down 1 of the long sides.

I will be doing the water filled tank method for leveling. Add water, recheck.

Just trying to think of the long run, as I don't want 180 gallons busting.

Shimming could be an option depending on the stand design. If it is a custom stand made with 2x4's shimming should be no problem at all. If it is a press board stand I would be much less confident in it. You will also have cosmetic issues if you shim that much height which are easier to hide with a custom stand.

You also need to make sure the back edge of the tank is solidly sitting on the tack strip. Bad things can happen if it is only sitting on the edge of the strip.

It sounds like you know what you are doing with tank placement. I do want to add that I have never wished my tank was closer to the wall. I do wish that it was further away from it! When I replace my tank this winter the back edge will go from 2" from the wall to 6" away.

Its a custom stand made by the manufacturer of the tank.. Didn't want to chance a home built stand..

1 6' section will be on a tack strip. The other 2 sides and back will be on carpet. I'll be enclosing 1 side in a peninsula cabinet attached to the canopy.. So 3 sides will be open. Attached pics.. Difference is.. My floor is carpet. In second picture I put a table basically where the tank will go. Hope this helps the visuals..

Yes, shimming should be fine with a stand Just shim it in as many points as possible.

You could also just cut out the tack strip where the tank will sit.

Its finally here!!! 180g Visio Aquarium. Custom stand.. here's the pics.. This will be open from 3 sides. The overflow has a 1.5" Durso pipe, and a 3/4" return. However, I think I am going to see just how big a return pipe I can actually get for it.. Seems the hole is big enough for a 1"

You could also attach a strip of 1/2" plywood all the way around the base of the stand except where the tack strip is. It'll mostly compress into the carpet and be hidden from view. Otherwise you'll need a LOT of shims.

Forgot to update this. Took out the carpet strip.. but that left a space where the padding wasn't. So probably should have left it.. but oh well. Got the tank set. filled it with water, waited a week. Shimmed the front, it was about 1/4" too low in the front. I believe due to where the carpet padding ends.. When I re fill it, I'll keep checking for level for a few months. Just to make sure..
