1k or 3k gyre?

I have a 40b and I am thinking of getting either the 1k icecap gyre or the 3k. I know the 3k is overkill but Not sure if it would be better to have the 3k and run it way low or the 1k run at a higher percentage. I think the 1k would be good but I would like to hear from people who have them. Don’t want to buy one then wish it was the other.

A 3k will be a better fit IMO. Wider angle, and you can just turn down the flow.

A bigger pump run at lower speed can be fine but to play devils advocate I run a 1K on my 40B and at 50% It moves sand. Not sure you'll be able to tune a 3K low enough to achieve what you want. Just food for thought.

I do like the pump quite a bit. Runs quieter than the regular gyre 230’s i had on a Reefer 250 and those ran at 30%.

I would say buy 2 1k and have great upper and lower flow. Having just one will have deadspots in your tank and a 3k is absolutely overkill in my opinion. I have a 3k in a RSR250 and I have it dialed way down with multiple deadspots.

It would be ideal I bet. Funds allow for only one right now but I think between it, my return pump, and a korallia powerhead it’ll do for now.

With another power head you should be fine.

Another thing to think about, the 40 breeder is a wide tank. One 3k will provide enough flow to cover the tank even at low flow.

Good point. I didn’t realize the 1k was about 4 inches narrower.
