Hey guys going to get my first fish and was wondering what are a couple of good choices and was thinking about getting a small frag of soft coral any idea's on that also.

No reef tank is complete without clowns! Plus they are hardy and adorably clumsy swimmers.

Go for 2 clowns and a frag of green star polyps!

Whatever you get make sure uve researched it before u ever bring it home, not after its in your tank.

clowns, yes
GSP, NO

lol

Honestly, I wouldnt pay money for GSP, im sure you can acquire it free of charge at some point in time. its also fairly invasive. id go for a sinularia, especially a nice colored one, well before GSP.

GSP is not as bad as some make it. put it on a rock by itself away from the main scape. I have it in my reef and cut it as it creeps along the sand every few months. I do trash the frags because no one wants it.

As far as fish I wouldn't go the damsel route, it's true they are one of the hardiest fish but they will almost always be the problem child later on especially since u put him in first. Clowns, chromis blenny or maybe a goby are good first choices. With your first fish it's fairly important to try to get somewhat peaceful ones or u won't have a chance to add peaceful ones later.
As far as corals I gotta agree with zoas they can grow in almost any reef regardless of lvls, come in endless differnt colors, are one of the cheaper corals and will generally grow consistently. I feel like growth is faster on a flatter rock.

So if I got a Clown fish should I get a pair?
Also how are the green toadstool mushroom leather for a first frag? My levels are okay but my calcium is a little low like 280 but I am using Seachem Fusion 2 part to raise it some.

I am about to add first fish too in couple weeks on newly cycled tank. I am also thinking clown fish and my lfs said best just put 1 (thinking to get percula).

I already owned a peppermint shrimp that my lfs hold for me until my tank cycle is done, should I just add the shrimp first before the clown to test if everything is ok

Cant go wrong with clowns. They are relatively inexpensive too. That is if you get a basic pair of Ocellaris Clowns. IF you jump into the Designer ones they can get expensive quick. As far as coral, Man I started with Zoa's. They have always been a favorite of mine. Zenia is always easy enough to keep. Honestly I like GSP. I like to put it on the back wall of my tanks. It looks pretty sweet when it fills in. But it is very true that it will take over fast. Just cut it back when you need to. I agree about damsels, I have some in my 14gallon bio cube, and they are pretty much the boss. Honestly they get on my nerves. Goby's are great fish, Firefish are easy, chromis, dotty backs, are all great choices. Stay away from wrasses, anthias, dragonets, and things like that. They all have specific care needs, and are a bit harder to care for.

I didnt catch where you are, but I highly recommend getting in touch with the local reef club in your area. Many times, they will help you get started, and they are always a great resource of knowledge.
