2 Croceas, here we go into Clam world

Just though I'd share some pics of my newest residents. Long time reader, first time clam owner. Went with Croceas since I don' have a large enough sandbed for the bigger ones. Got 2. One is farm raised, the other wild.

Wild one. Has more pronounced scutes:

Farm raised, smoother scutes. This one is my favorite of the 2, love the patterns and coloration!

Pretty happy with these guys, currently under some hydra 26 hds under acclimation mode.

I just picked up 2x Crocea too

I talked to the LFS owner about Squamosa that I wanted it and the owner said they did not stock it because the common squamosa color look not good compare to Maxima or Crocea and she said it a lot cheaper too so she gonna get 1 for me and she said she will look out for the good looking one too.

Nice, hope they get a good one for you. I wish I had room for a squamosa, It would be amazing to see them grow so huge!

I would say that the one with smoother scutes would more likely be the wild one. They're pretty much always found burrowed into a rock in the wild, and they would have worn their scutes all away in the process.

Nevertheless, those are awesome looking Croceas. Make sure you really hit it hard on the lighting, I could not get mine to grow well until I was hitting it with over 600 PAR up top. I'm sure that they get at least this much, if not higher PAR out in the wild.

I actually own one specimen each of the 5 commonly collected Tridacnids, and I plan to grow them all out. If I don't upgrade by then, I might have to make them become the new rockwork in my tank, ha ha. I might even dose enough 2 part to have to water down the salinity daily too.

Holy smokes 600 par wow! I doubt I have that much where they sit but really have no clue as I don't have a par meter. They are under and between x2 hydra 26 Hds (x4 over the entire tank but they would only get significant light from x2 of them).

I've got 1 about 10" from surface and the other about 13" and lights turned to about 90%. Hope thats' ok, I can't currently tell exactly how they will do under that 90% yet as I am currently light acclimating with the ai program.

They seem to be opening up nicely and adjusting well. Very responsive to shadows so far.

Double checked where they were from and I was incorrect on the one that I thought was wild. Actually they are BOTH listed as cultured. I assumed that meant farm raised. Perhaps one was cultured in wild and the other Not? I have no clue!

I'm running 2x Kessil a360we at 80%, I will hit 100% in a another month. I'm still hoping my LFS getting me a squamosa then I'm done with my clam tank

As for PAr metter, I don't have one either but I can see my clams look much more nicer with higher intensity each time I rank it up.

Blue Squamosa are the holy grail for a lot of clam keepers. People who think that Squammys are dull have not seen them all.

My LFS said Blue Squamosa is rare and hard to get since most rare good stuff exporting to Japan LOL
They did tell me that they have seen squamosa but not a blue one, its color look more like common derasa that's why they are not stocking it since they already have hard to to get rid of derasa while blue maxi or crocea sell like hot cakes

Divers Den has Blue Squamosa pretty frequently for roughly 250.00.

Crocea are by far by favorite clams though.

That's where I got my blue Squamosa from, from Live Aquaria. Online shopping can be annoying with the DOAs, this is true. I don't think that the LFS has a better time with DOAs from their wholesalers though, just that we don't see them when they arrive.

I don't mind shopping from LA because of their easy refund policy though, so even though I may lose specimens from time to time from shipping stress, I'm almost always guaranteed a refund.

I mostly keep it local too, but if you want something truly exceptional and the LFS will not adapt or bring in something, then LA is good place since they have a good record and no-questions-asked guarantee.

I'm already have too many blue color and oddly I love those gold color clams more than blue hahaha

I bought the last 2 gold Squamosas from DD
Lets hope they arrive on time because of the crazy Holidays shipping schedule going on everywhere!
