I would like to know what folks use to attach their rock together for aquascaping. Mine does not stack and stay stable at all.
I am considering quarter inch (diameter) stainless steel rod in 2.5 inch pieces. Drill each rock to a 1.25 inch depth and glue each end to separate rocks. could go with shorter pieces of rod shallower drill holes for smaller rocks too since my tank is only a 10 gallon. Can I use plastic craft sticks instead... etc.
I am very curious as to how others keep their rocks where they put them without elastics, ugly zip ties, string or tying endless miles of clear fishing line :suspicious:

Second question: since my tank is NEW and small (just in the planning stages and getting everything ready) will I still need a quarantine tank or can i just put my lone fish right into the tank once it is cycled

Any and all input, suggestions and opinions are greatly appreciated (even tho the astounding amount of info is boggling) :amen:

No to the stainless steel rods, they'll rust! Use acrylic and your plans are great.

QT'ing is a must if you don't want a tank full of ICH. But if your only planing on keeping 1 fish forever then there's really no need.

Yep to the plastic and no to the metal. The cheapest thing I found was to buy the plastic coat hangers from the dollar store and just cut those.

I used fiberglass rods and two little fishies epoxy. It worked great. The rods I got from Home Depot. They are actually driveway markers. The ones with the red reflective lenses on top and just cut them to the lengths I needed. Good luck!

hmmmm, come to think of it....

I have a tent that i havent used in 5 years. could i just cut the poles into 2.5 or 4 inch pieces and rinse well with hot water and aquarium salt do ya think! lol

I'd be concerned about using fiberglass as most contain a special glue. Unlike boats those rods may not be specially sealed. I'd go with acrylic for peace of mind.

Ultimately, I have a 90 gallon plywood tank in the making as well as a free 50 gallon aquarium I could eventually set up as saltwater. In the future, my little 10 gallon that I am establishing right now, will be used for the QT (I know, small but should be effective as such) I also have a 55 gallon that I plan to divide in half to use as sump(s) for the 90 and 50 (since it has crappy dimensions anyway)
All of this will be housed in a custom build stand with a center pillar (dividing the two display tanks) for the electrical on top, and the w/c station below. I am also soaking more DIY rock pieces as we speak, and making more as containers become available! No pics available yet since it's all still spread out, in planning stages AND not even purchased yet....
Slow .. lotsa patience right? That is the key to success in saltwater!! Good things come to those who wait! (as my mom used to tell me)

Fiberglass does not use any sort of "special" glue. It is a resin that has been fully kicked with a catalyst and poses zero harm.

I just stacked my rock for the 10 gallon, now gotta start working on an uberscape for my up and coming 50 gallon (still a couple months away). I went to the craft store and purchased some fiberglass rods that I can cut into pieces....and gonna use marine glue by LePage that actually states "aquarium safe"" right on the front of the pkg (bonus!!).
I have a plan to cover the ugliest 12' wall in my basement.... ... details in future!

go to youtube & type "Pillar Aquascape in Reef Aquarium" in the search box. the very first video from glassboxdesign channel. its the exact same method i use for aquascaping my tank. or...
