2 tanks one sump

hello reefers
i am running a 4ft tank around 50 gallons with a sump but i am planning on adding another tank to the system and thought why not connet both tanks to one sump since my protein skimmer and etc can handle 2 tanks no problem but my question is do they have to be side to side or above each other to work and how i am going to run it if it works will be i already have the pipes ready and the second return pump i just want to know if its okay to run 2 tanks that are not side to side or above each other

The two tanks do not need to be near each other or at the same height.
