So I hooked my brand new in the box apex up 2 weeks ago. It's been working great. Today at 3:45 pm it disconnected, so when I got home I took a look at it, and the head unit is blinking purple, yellow, green. I've read online that a pattern of lights means Neptune support is needed so I put in a ticket. I found 1 similar complaint on the Neptune forum that said they had to have their head unit replaced. A bit bummed. Some of my equipment still seems to be working like the powerhead, and the return pump which I hope stays on as I'm in the middle of my cycle :(

All kinds of good news there despite the fact that new gear crapping out on you really sucks.
1 - a controller isn't at all critical to a cycling tank, as you can always just plug in the pumps to the wall to keep the water moving.
2 - Neptune will take good care of you.
