I purchased one yellow eyed kole tang about 2 months ago from lfs. It was eating well and looked fat and healthy. A month later it stopped appearing. I gave it a few weeks then decided to purchase another from live aquaria. Came in beautiful. Dark purple and fat.

Drip acclimated and then dropped in tank.

Never saw aggression towards it from any other fish. But same thing. Just disappeared one day

Levels checked out great. Even tested using two different tests. No ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, so forth

Fish list
1 large sailfin
1 lyretail anthias
3 yellow tangs
1 purple tang
2 clowns
1 malanarus wrasse
1 leopard wrasse
1 Midas blenny
1 coral beauty
1 potter's angel

Ive read that coral beauties can be aggressive to kole tangs. But other than that, no clue

Anyone else find they cant keep specific fish? This is frustrating

Tank is a 300 gallon btw :)

Should add that the purple tang was added after the latest kole and has been isolated by the yellows BUT is coming around nicely and swimming more openly without the yellows giving grief

But yea the purple was just added...few days later, kole disappeared. I doubt itd be the PT seeing how it's been isolated the first week but who knows?

Sailfin, yellows and a purple is sure to create a hostile environment for any tang introduced to the tank. It’s best to add all tangs at the same time to avoid aggression and possibly death.

Thanks yall

I'm feeding fish eggs 1 or 2 times daily and feeding nori twice as well

IMHO,
seaweed that has garlic has always been my go to for my tangs. I have never lost one yet (Knock Knock) ;)

Actually yea thats what I'm using right now. The Ocean nutrition with garlic

It doesn’t sound like you are doing any QT. Were they properly QT’d?
QT of tangs is basically a necessity and you are playing a dangerous game by attempting to keep multiples of the same species and or Genus.

A fish hiding is usually from aggression or disease.

Using a social acclimation box can help lower aggression when a fish is added.

You mentioned drip acclimating the second yellow eye from LA, how long did you drip acclimate?

This sounds like disease if you didn’t see any aggression, probably ich. Not quarantining with tangs is Russian roulette unfortunately.

Well my lfs suggested Koles are finicky. Haven't lost any other tangs thank goodness. Just these two Koles. They looked beautiful and healthy. So who knows.

The purple is now out in the open and doing great.

Drip acclimation can be a death sentence for shipped fish. When the bag is opened, CO2 escapes and pH rises. This makes the ammonia built up in the shipping bag really toxic. You are better off just matching the salinity of your qt to that of the bag and dropping the fish in qt.
