I have a 40 breeder that I want to put a sump on and have a 20 long laying around just wondering what size drain holes and how many.. The pump I'm getting is rated for 800 gph. Never set up a sump before lol

I just drilled a buddies 40 breeder and drilled a 1" hole for the overflow and 3/4" hole for the return !! Used a jebao dc2000 for the return pump

I was told the size of the overflow has to be able to keep up with your pump? Is that true? That's why I'm trying to figure out what size hole to do for an 800 gph pump

Yes and a 1" drain should handle 1000 gph but after head loss you won't be getting the full 800 so you should be good !! I use slow flow through my fuge and get flow in the DT from powerheads
