They still suck up nitrogen compounds co2 and light then convert it into sugars and growth

Redwoods are plants!
heres my point

all I need to know is if macroalgae will impede the cycle or will help it? The macroalgae would take a while to kick in from die off so I’d assume it would feed the bacteria

Why don't you do a small experiment with a couple gallons of SW and some macro algae and let us know.

Ok, I will probably do macro in my dt because ik it dosent hurt the nitrogen cycle in fw and the cycle applies to saltwater

Macro will be fine during a cycle, yah it uses ammonia but the cycle is still going to happen regardless and macro will bring in bacteria and such with it.

It might suffer a bit and get algae growing on it if you get the after cycle wispy gha bloom and some macros are more delicate but the hardy ones shouldn't melt too easy.

i think youre right on the money. BUT there's so many better ways to do it without wasting time/money/energy

well all ya gotta do is throw critical thinking out the window and then you'll be fine
Throw critical thinking, common sense, and manners down the toilet and flush repeatedly.

Thanks, I was beginning to think what I had read was wrong.

now you got the hang of it

I was only trained in plantae in school not protists but the big problem with free ammonia with plants is that it causes tissue destruction and can rupture chloroplasts. I would rather not make assumptions but I would assume that macro would be affected in a similar way with elevated ammonia.

Ok so now that question is sorted out, has anyone tried Paul b’s method of fake live rock or is it outdated? I think it might be easier to scape with and I would get a more visually appealing piece. Would incorporating coralline rock do the trick and save some money too?

Oh ok. I know that algae is more common in dirty water which is common in a early cycle so I thought that if I get like some caleurpa or something that is a nutrient sink I’d be able to outcompete gha and keep the rock clean
