Hello all,

It's been over 20yrs since I've had anything salty, and nearly 15 for anything aquatic. However I've got the itch and been lurking since March. I know it's been said before... but things have really changed!

When I was young I was fish only and successful for years with a 29g standard with a HOB wet/dry and water changes.

This time around I'm going a little wider having found a Oceanic 50 (30x18x21) I'm picking up today, and will start FOWLR transitioning into softie/LPS once things settle in. Will be awhile as I assemble bits and pieces. Planning on drilling for a 15 or 20t sump. Ultimately would really like to go skimmer-less and be on a macro algae or scrubber system. It's good to have goals... we'll see how it goes.

I've been focused on how much light to put on it. I'm looking at some lower cost options but may just bite the bullet and get a couple 160s or Primes and be done with it. Realistically, I'm unconvinced I need that much horsepower if I'm not doing SPS. It would be nice to have a single mount instead, so something like the Ocean Revive T-247 is a consideration, again probably more light than needed. Not really a fan of the black boxes, purely for mounting and aesthetic reasons. Recommendations welcomed, I've probably read 300 or more threads on the matter.

Welcome to R2R :) Lighting won’t matter much for your FOWLR start but for LPS, Primes and Kessils are both popular. I would also consider checking out the aquatic life T5 hybrid. It can do wonders for getting rid of shadowing depending on your rockscape.

Welcome aboard. It sounds like you have quite the journey ahead of you. When you get the chance, please start a build thread under "member tanks". That way, we can follow your tank progress over the next few years. Welcome to R2R!

Welcome! I am in the same boat in learning about all of the changes and new technology.

Welcome to r2r!! I'm sure much has changed for you.

I would agree you probably dont need a whole lot of horsepower if you dont plan on getting any sps. Most light fixtures will work fkr soft and lps corals.

This is a great forum and i hope we can help you as you get back into the hobby!

welcome to R2R!

yup, the technology has definitely changed! it’s fun and exciting and intimidating at the same time, lol.

good call on drilling the tank. (my own story: i’m back in the hobby since february of last year; dusted off my empty 180G tank sitting in a corner of the living room for 10-12 years. it’s originally manufactured undrilled because i never thought i’d need a sump for FOWLR set-up, and i’m guilty of not thinking things out better on the reboot ... mixed reef set-up now).

i recommend lots of progress shots! :)
