My tank is 210 gal tall 28" Im thinking of getting 3 XR30 pros gen6 and 2 reef bright 72" strips actinic do you think this will be overkill?
I plan to do mixed reef and some sps later down the road.

The most successful tanks seem to have a ton of light coverage. So really the more lights the better. I also like combing the single source lights with strips to get the best coverage.

a pair of XR30 g6 covers a 24 x 48 (24 x 24 each) inch area and will cost you 935 x2 or 1870.
Orphek Atlantik iCON covers a 48 x 30 area and will cost you 985. And I think the Orphek is a better light.

I am in the process of convering a 300g 96x32 tallx24 to salt. Since I would need at least 4 of the Radions I started looking for alternatives and if you have not at least looked at the Orpheks I'd encourage you to do so.

There are some modular Orphek lights available also, the OR3 series of lights you might look at for the side strip lights, or just build the modular tailored to what you want.

Could possibly do 1 Atlantik iCON and 1 compact and still save ya a bundle on lights.

I have a 6FT tank with 3X 32Hydra HD's and theyre turned down to 65%. They used to be at 90 and killed my torches and chalice. I have a few SPS and they seem happy

I think that would be an awesome lighting setup with good spread. If you find later you want another g6 for whatever reason you can always add depending on the height you mount the lights. Great choice!

A single XR30 Pro G6 has a wider coverage than 24 by 24, BRS had it listed at 48 by 48.
I gotta check this, I was told, by more than a few people Radion G6 should not be used to cover more than a 24x24 patch of tank in 30 inches of water. Maybe for 24 inches of water depth or less wider spread? I am not sure, I'll get back to you on this.

What are you trying to grow? I have 30 inch tank 8 feet long 3 feet front to back and use 5 G4 / G3 and can pretty much grow whatever I want. Witj the G6s saying 48 inches I think I'd still do 3 on a 8 ft tank or some strips with 2.

Mine is 72 x 32w x 24h and I use 5 XR30 pro on a rail perpendicular. Recently one of mine had the open circuit error, I replaced it with a G6 but during those 2 weeks I could see a difference with running just the 4 lights.

urned down to 65

What do you mean by the difference? Man 5 of them is alot of light!

In the 5th week of a reboot.........nothing to really show but some rock and sand. Here's how I hung the lights:

Only real, somewhat dark spot is to the very right side of the tank. In fact i wouldn't actually call it a "dark spot."
The last 9"-10" of that side is under the a/c ductwork so the edge of the light rest against the edge of said ductwork. If I'm making sense.

ya, I understand EXACTLY what your saying. thank you. I started a thread about reef lights a week ago or so, I made a decision based off that thread and what I have seen in this one, going to hang XR30 G6's above my 300g when I convert in a few months. In fact, I am going to start with a pair of the G6 on each end and add a 3rd over the center of my 8foot tank later as money permits, then if I still have shadows or dim spots, going to mimic what you did with light bars. Thank you for the pics, it helped me to nail down exactly how I am going to set mine up.

28” is deep. I assume 6’ long.

I ran with great success: 4 Radion XR30’s over a 17” tall, 72” long tank. 3 didn’t feel right. I did poorly in both PAR and growth with 4, Kessil A360’s.

If I were you, I don’t think 4, XR30 Pros would be far off on cost from what you spec’d and will give you great coverage, control, easy mounting, and penetration. This is based on the fact that I had difficulty finding low-light spots in my 17” deep tank so at 28” you are probably good for a mixed reef. Although I wouldn’t try a clam or a high-light coral in the sand bed without taking PAR readings at that depth. You could always add a Kessil A360x or 500x down the road with a lens to spotlight a clam or anemone or coral in the bottom of the tank if you wanted.

Forgot to mention lights are 12"-13" above the waterline.

Thanks for your picture. I’m running 4 Radions and 3 Kessils over my 72” tank. Whenever my wife tells me I went too crazy on lights I can just show her your lights and my setup will seem tame.
