I have been on this forum watching many other build threads and decided it was time to start first build thread. To start I will give a little information about myself and tanks. I am 19 years old and set up my first reef tank when I was 17. I started with a 10 gallon tank that I got at Petco during the $1 per gallon sale. I thought that I had done enough research and took the leap to saltwater from freshwater, but to my demise I didn't know enough about reef tanks. Within 4 months all my live stock (fish and corals) where dead and the entire tank was taken over by red cyano. With some research I found out that a nano tank was more difficult than larger tanks, so I had a 30 gallon sitting in the back room that I turned into my saltwater tank. I was successful with this tank and my corals flourished. I never put a fish in this tank, only corals and inverts. I then was offered a free 125 gallon tank, and of course I said yes, who can turn down a free tank. Once I got the 125 set up everything was going well until I started my first semester of college and didn't spend the time needed to properly maintain this large of a tank. So I tore the 125 down and sold the tank. I knew that I didn't want to get out of the hobby so I moved all my corals and fish into a 75 gallon until I decided what I wanted to do.
This brings us to where I am today. All of my corals are still in the 75 gallon holding tank and are awaiting the move to their new home, a 220 gallon tank.
I purchased the tank Reef Ready and brand new through a wholesaler that I work for on the side.
The tank is 6' long x 2' wide x 30" tall
I found someone selling a custom stand and canopy that would work perfect for my new build.
For a sump I knew that I wanted to do this tank correctly so I contacted synergy reef systems and ordered their new 48" sump that they built for Bulk Reef Supply. Mine was the first that they made in the neon green color.
For a skimmer I went with a Reef Octopus 250-INT because I had great success with RO on my 30 gallon reef.
Lighting will be done by 3 400 watt Metal Halides, 2 96 watt Power Compact Actinic Bulbs, and some sort of led's for moon lighting (haven't purchased the led's yet)
Flow inside the tank will be 2 MP40's, one on each end of the tank and a tunze 6125 mounted on a sea sweep in the middle of the back wall. I will see how this combination works and might add two more MP40's on the back wall if I need more flow.
The tank is currently in the process of cycling and should be ready to go around the begging of
February.
