Planning on stocking a 220g reef (it's actually 224g if that matters to anyone lol), and I love tangs, clownfish, and moorish idols, obviously moorish idols have their own set of complications, so I think I might opt to get heniochus diphreutes (schooling bannerfish) instead. So.. I want to do 3-4 tangs in this tank, 1-2 clownfish, and suggestions on number of schooling bannerfish? 1-3 range I assume? Here are a list of tangs and clowns that I like...

Tangs:
Yellow eyed kole
Blue hippo
Yellow Hawaiian
Blue powder
Purple *
Blue Caribbean
Clown
Orange shoulder
Blond naso *
Achilles *
Chevron *

Clowns: any variation of Ocellaris, percula, or maroon that isn't misbar or can't be found for $50 or less. (I can actually get picassos locally for pretty cheap, but I am leaning towards basic Ocellaris though, maybe, suggestions?! Maybe a bigger species is needed since all the other fish will be 7+ inches?)

* = honestly more pricey than I would like

I plan on having red skunk cleaner shrimp as the main CUC.. Granted they are reef safe? Going to be mostly softies and maybe some lps, no sps most likely for a good amount of time, those sorts of things.

Thanks for reading, lemme know what you think!

You should be good with any combination of above fish.

Regular ocellaris can hold their own against larger fish.

Add the heniochus before any tangs, odd numbers are best for multiples.

Red skunk shrimp are reef safe.

Thanks for the reply! Would the H.D. Be a problem child if I only had 1? If I got maroon clowns would they be problems?

Is your tank 6 or 8 feet long? Some of those tangs won't do great in a 6 footer, but holding off until I know if yours is 6 or 8. Though, I would skip the clown tang if you want other tangs --- the older/larger they get the meaner they get. Could have issues with other tangs in there with a clown tang.

Ive had two pairs of maroons over the last decade and IMO they are fine unless you give them an anenome. Regarding the Tangs, I currently have three (8"each) in my 210 along with four wrasses and misc smaller fish. Last year when I had six tangs, the three adults and three juvies there was a lot of stress in the tank.

Okay so no clown tang. The tank is 72 long, 24 deep, 30 tall. Standard 220 size. What do you suggest given that information? Thanks for the replies all!

I'm also interested in the responses as I'm planning a similar tank.

What would you all reco for a fun schooling fish? Or even some smaller random fish to fill out the tank? I love the look of anthias but I hear you really need to be able to feed them a few times a day. If they ate dry food that would be fine since I can program a feeder. ANyway - I'm going to watch this thread.

Supposedly the H.D. Acts like a withdrawing crackhead pacing the glass everywhere, lol, just something I read, sounds fun, they look cool (like a moorish idol), are reef safe, and school

Achilles dont do well in any tank for the most part. I've had great success with Naso, Hippo, Sailfin, Kole, and yellow. They are all very hardy and pretty good tank mates to all others. The Rabbit fish all do well too.
FWIW, my trio of anthias do eat pellet food and my tank gets fed four times a day. Two with pellets on an auto feeder, once with Nori and once with a seafood blend like Rods or LRS reef frenzy.

I really like the yellow, kole, blue hippo, powder blue, and blue Caribbean, but I feel like that's too much blue and yellow lol. And 5 tangs is too many I feel like tbh for this tank. Ideally I would feed once a day and maybe leave a slice or two of cucumber or seaweed or something every other day. With that specification on desired feeding, what suggestions can be made?

Anyone have anything to say about my last post and if 1 H.M. Would be okay rather than getting 3?

I'd have to ask why ideally feed once a day? Humans prefer to eat several times a day and most algea eaters graze all day long in the wild. My motto has always been feed heavy skim heavier. When I skimp on food my LPS and zoas suffer. My tangs graze on the rocks all day out of natural habit.

I typically just always remember to feed right when I turn my lights on, I'm a pretty low tech guy I always feed my current tanks about 12-1pm when I flip them on. With this tang tank I would ideally feed when I turn lights on, and every other day place the necessary number of cucumbers or seaweed slices for them to munch on over time. As far as corals go, idk if I will even do many lps but will probably do all the lowest maintenance/low tech soft corals I can so the tank is really simple and can just be enjoyed.

Tangs, especially young ones have a crazy high metabolism, they would eat all day long given the chance. More feedings contribute to less aggression and overall improved health. Try and up the feeding frequency.

A heniochus will be fine kept singly.

Would the tangs be happy if I fed them meatier foods when I turned lights on every day then left them cucumber/seaweed to munch on all day, every day? Thanks for the responses all! Thanks for answering my Heniochus question too!

Yes, the more you feed your tangs, the happier they will be. I feed heavy so my small fish stay healthy. Plenty of people only feed once a day and a few feed once a week. I've had plenty of fish starve to death in my tanks over the years. A few is too many IMO. I've had a couple yellow tanks wither away and when there are too many wrasses in my tank the least aggressive fish slowly receded into the rock work and disappeared. A single $40 eheim auto feeder can be programmed to feed several times a day at various amounts. It works also for trips out of town. A great investment for any tank.
