225G DSA MIXED REEF TANK "Poseidon"

Hi everyone!

I have been in the hobby for about 9 years now. I started with a 55G FOWL with a HOB a few years later I graduated to my 90G reef tank with my first sump system!. I quickly grew out of my 90G (within a few months haha) now I have a 225G Reef. I have been collecting my equipment for about a year now.

Wow. Your tank looks amazing. Hopefully by this summer I will have enough money together for this tank. Could you post pics of your plumbing and equipment you have for it?

You did a very clean job on your plumbing. I'm in the same boat you were in. I have a 30g and 75g hob equipment and I'm ready for this 225. I a little intimidated plumbing everything because I've never had a sump before. Where did you get your PVC and close off valves from?

I am pretty OCD, and I've got to tell you, you're a fantastic equipment organizer. Such a clean look, plus it all makes sense, arrangement wise!

If I were to offer criticism, it would be the following:

1) I see you put the skimmer before the bio-pellet reactor (Flow wise). If my understanding of bio-pellets is correct, shouldn't it be the other way around? Maybe switch places of the two units, you may end up getting better skim, and overall filtration.

2) I'll say upfront I've never been much of a fan of plant-filtration, like refugiums, etc. If it were up to me, I would remove the mangroves for the following reasons a) There aren't enough there to make much (if any) impact on the water quality of your tank. b) The light they need will cost you in arm grease in terms of cleaning the other machinery (Corraline, photosynthetic sludge, etc). My approach to reefing is the less physical and tedious work, the more motivation I'll have to complete other reefing tasks. and finally c) I like have leftover space for any "what-ifs" that may show up. Things like needing the space for more filtration, etc is always nice to just have on hand without the worry of rearranging everything else to accomplish a task. I also just like some room should I need to work down there.

Otherwise I love this tank, and think it's progression into a mature and gorgeous reef is but certain. Good job!

thank you! I got the pvc at lowes and the valves and connections at my LFS. If you get valves get cepex brand. They are by far my favorite very simple to open and close.

Thank you so much! I appreciate it. It took alot of planning for the plumbing. I love my sump but it has a few downfalls:

The skimmer is rated for 400G so we couldn't fit it anywhere. The biochurn also doesn't have a outtake hose it overflows on the top so I haven't seen any problems! hopefully it doesn't affect anything.

Also, The refugium is way to small for the size of tank so the mangroves are more for aesthetic. I agree with you though that they really won't do much but they are an awesome conversation piece!
