I'm currently in the process of having a 230g tank built, 72x30x25 peninsula style. So while I wait I'm trying to figure out the design and more importantly the engineering of building a stand.

I met up with @Diesel today and saw his amazing stand and tank. I don't think I'll ever forget the first moments I laid eyes on it. He was showing me his plywood stand and I have the general ideas I need to move forward.

But what we were discussing is that I want to do a 4ft and 2ft opening. The reason is that I only want 1 side of the stand to have the doors and I want room to remove the sump if I had to.

I mentioned I'd like to use a 2x6 header across that one part of the tank. However, his idea is to double and even better, triple the plywood thickness on that side across that span.

My idea for the 2x6 comes from the king of DIY's 375+ gallon tank stand where he uses a 2x6 to support an 8ft span.

Below is a really rough drawing of the face in question. The far right would be against the wall.

What do you think of the use of a 2x6 or double/triple plywood thickness?

I think you'll be fine as you have it described. I don't think that a doubling or tripping of the plywood would be necessary, although it definitely wouldn't hurt. I would suggest using 3/4" cabinet grade plywood for your build. Cabinet grade is definitely of a higher quality than many you would buy at one of the big box stores..
