Well I'm not entirely over my crash, but I'm beginning to rehab with notions of rebooting my 240. I attribute my failure to 3 crucial things.
1. Not realizing what a larger tank would require. 90-->240
2. Rushing, impatience.
3. Cutting corners.
So I embark on this second quest with knowledge of what I did wrong. But alas I have questions.
What I thought my skimmer could handle in fact did not. Can I run 2 like skimmers or should I just get one rated for my tank/bioload? I only plan to have 2-3 fish.
I want to rework my bean-animal overflow. I used 1-1/2 pipe down can I restrict to just 1" This will save me space in sump and can modify my sump room to better fit my needs.
I used to run an algae scrubber... which factored into my infestation I believe. Can I get away with just a UV light?
One of the corners I cut was rock, I didn't want to have a rock wall like I had in my 90. So I scaled down. I think I only bought 100lbs and made my scape. My thought process was this, I only had three fish in a 240; 100lbs should have been sufficient. Right or Wrong? the bio load is just from the fish correct not the coral? I'm looking into these marine pure rocks however.
Do I run a refugium knowing I'm only going to have coral in the tank this time. Maybe 2 sets of clowns this depends on the next question.
Anyone have a Anemone ONLY tank?
Another factor I feel played a role is my cleanup crews... They just didn't seem to do the job. Infact they died quicker than I could replenish them. The crabs were fine in fact I have a hunch they took out the snails. Or was my Pep. Shrimp the culprit. Again since I won't have this huge bio load with fish are they CC's necessary.
I was impatient with the cycle so in the fourth week I dumped that bacteria crap in and started stocking the tank, I had issues with high nitrates after that so I bought those pellets and put into a reactor and this was the beginning of the end. I lost my tang, fire angel, torch, montipora, trumpet.
I'm second guessing myself... since what worked in my 90 for so long failed me with my 240. I moved everything from 90 to the 240... 5 fish 10 coral. Everything was the same except for the
A. Scrubber, pellet reactor, lbs of rock (120lbs in 90 which did not come with)
I didn't account for how much water I would be making and the time it takes to do so. The longer maintenance it required (maybe self induced). It always seemed that I was behind and the tank was controlling me if that makes any sense. But that could be a result of everything happening at once.
nitrates high-->death of stock-->Ich-->Dino infestation--Boom!
Sorry for the wall, thanks for reading.
