I'm setting up a new 40B and taking down my 55g, so now I pretty much decided on getting MHs. I have t5s over my 55g as of now. I was wondering if a single 250w is good for the 40B (pretty sure it is) but never had any experience with MHs. Where can I get decent fixture? Maybe some of you have one for sell? Thanks guys

I've got a couple of 250w halide fixtures I'd be willing to either trade or sell.

What are the dimensions of a 40b? MH pendants are each designed with a specific light spread (and each is a little different) but are typically 24inchx24inch spread. You can add or subtract by moving up or down. You can probably do good with a single fixture and have two less lit areas on the sides and a column or island in the middle under the light. That is why I would do anyway, then you can have a huge range of coral. Just have a couple t5s to supplement the areas with less light.

Sorry I'm posting in bham thread, but Starkville is fairly close.

The dimensions are 36x18x16. I'm prolly gonna go with the two island look honestly but you know how scaping goes. I'll be a mixed reef more Sps, LPS and Zoas. Not gonna be going with soft corals. Any input is greatly appreciated as I'm new to MHs, good LEDs are out of the question at this time due to funds.

I have a 36" light with 2ea 150w mh and pc supplemental actinics that I use on my 40b. I have also used 4ea 36" t5ho. Both have worked well. Not sure if one 250 would get the sides. It will probably depend more on the reflector than anything else

Actually it's more the height... but get your point. It's a very bright light and it's 20k.

I had a 36x18x24 it's the tank in my pic and grew all the sps I wanted and I had 2x 250watt mh with luminarcs and radiums.. My buddy on here has the same set up on his 36x18x24 now and loves it..

Your issue is going to be on the height of the tank but you can run high watts it would just require you to run the reflector farther from the water

What would you think would be a decent height? I might end up running 2x250w as well.

I've got a 60x30x24 with 3x 400watt at 16in from bulb and it's the same tank height as my 65g just raised them some.. I had great reflectors on my 36in length tank and it needed two.. Mh is goof at 24foot print so on a 36 long tank you would have 6inches of shadow on each side
