28 Gallon Deep Blue Rimless SPS Reef

Well....depends on the diameter of plumbing...whether tubing or PVC.

Large-size tubing is pretty expensive, so most folks don't use much besides small tubing.

But in general, tubing should be close to the same as PVC as long as the inside diameter is the same on both.

(Vinyl tubing thickness isn't nearly as standard as PVC, where almost all you see is "schedule 40" thickness.)

Along with diameter of plumbing, the flow rate is what you're most concerned with.

Higher flow rates generate more internal friction. More internal friction means less space inside the pipe for smoothly flowing water.

By the same token, lower flow rates mean less internal friction. At sufficiently low flow rates plumbing size almost doesn't matter.

My plumbing will be fairly simple, thankfully. I'm going to run tubing and not pvc, as originally planned.

If I could change your mind back to hard PVC I would. The only exception is if you're keeping the flow fairly low for the size of tubing you pick – then, like I said, it doesn't usually matter so much.

If the return in question is for the 28 gallon tank on this thread, you should only need around 50GPH to 100GPH – thankfully that should be easy with almost any tubing size.

Just for example, 1/2" PVC would add nearly no friction loss at this flow rate:

You've convinced me, I'm gonna go with PVC piping - I was never 100% sold on tubing, so you just convinced me. I bought my pump yesterday so I'm hoping to get it all plumbed up here soon. Just need to paint the bottom.

I agree I heard the deep blue ones are not that good
I recomend threaded ones so if the time comes u can reuse the bulk heads
 
If you haven't bought your ATO yet, let me recommend you go with the Tunze Osmolator. Not the nano. The nano has one sensor and it can get snails in it. Spend the extra and be safe.

Well all I can say is from experience
And bulkheads aren't the cheapest thing in the world if it's a thread u pipe dope it up and then when and if u have to move the tank anywhere u won't have to ruin a bulk head in the process

also just looking at the plumbing u don't have any unions to make it easier to remove pieces to clean and what not. Maby u can get away with it on the drain but on the return u would want one so u can remove ur return pump to clean if need be.

Once again just trying to help ya not do the same things I have done.

Thanks for the input, I was planning to install a union on the return line (maybe on the drain, I've got time to think on it). I agree, efficiency is key!
 
The tank is painted! I'm glad that I went with black and not blue - I think that the dark color will make the corals pop quite a bit. I also like the look of coralline on a black surface.

Looks great! If you do not mind, how much did the tank cost you? Where did you get it? I looked at some of Deep Blue's cubes online last night.

My experience is a little skewed - throughout high school & part of college I worked at a saltwater aquarium store and was able to secure a pretty heavy discount with my previous boss. Now that I've graduated and am getting back in the hobby, I'm working for store credit at his store and getting things at a discount - just on Saturdays and on the side from my full time job. I'm sorry I'm not able to provide a retail price.

Help me out here, as I'm looking for suggestion on aquascaping. I've decided that I'm going to go with live rock (~20 lbs), however I'm not wanting to have many bulky pieces. I took a screenshot of an aquascape that I really want to model after, but am unsure of what type of rock to use to try to get this look - I know that this the the Reef Saver rock that is sold on a lot of online website. Given that I want to model this aquascape, what kind of rock would you suggest?

This aquascape would allow for several colonies on the rocks, on the side glass panels, on the back wall, and on the bottom - which we all know is what I'm going for! :)

I would try to keep the controller for the vortex away from any accidental water spills
