I just got a used 29 gal bio cube and I am needing some advise onthe setup ,which is the best for a reef setup the bioballs and filter cartridge or using a different type of media ??

When I had my biocube 29 I retrofit 20 3w Cree LEDs on dimmers from rapidled in the stock hood. Picked up a skimmer that fits in the first chamber I forget the brand name kind of like the tunze one. 2nd chamber I ran a media basket with filter floss on top chaeto macro algae in the 2nd and chemi pure elite in the 3rd.

If i was you i would buy or build a media rack and a fuge for the center chamber. This is all about personal preference really, im using using just a piece of filter pad in the tray, live rock rubble and a bag or carbon in mine. Works just fine for me.

I am using InTank media basket and it works fine for me, also google "biocube resource guide" and you pretty much have all the info needed for a complete setup

I use some quilt batting wrapped around the top tray, bag of carbon on the bottom. I use the sponge in the 2nd baffle, and i run the biocube skimmer but upgraded it a bit. Coralife wood airstone, 3w dual output air pump with an inline valve. I also upgraded the lights with an aquastyle kit. My biocube is doing really well like this.

Right now, i am running:
Chamber 1 - Removed false floor and removed cartridge. Widen the overflow to chamber 2. Now contains my heater

Chamber 2 - Bio balls removed, False floor removed. InTank media basket with regular filter pad cut to fit on top and Chaeto below. Tunze 9002 Skimmer next to media basket with InTank upgraded cup. Back of the tank i had to shave the paint off and hang a light in order to grow the chaeto. I have it on a reverse time cycle to my regular lights in order to avoid PH fluctuations.

Chamber 3 - Removed the sponge on bottom. Removed Stock Pump and replaced with Rio HF6 and eheim 16/22 tubing to eliminate 90 degree angle return. I also have my thermometer back there.

Lighting - removed the stock hood and replaced with a Sunpod 150W DE 14K Phoenix (Soon to be 20K Radium)

Top - Custom cut Plexi glass top with multiple holes for less heat captured. Also have a fan clipped onto the back of chambers 2 and 3 to help combat the heat. The tank ranges from 76-80 with 78 being the most constant temp.
