I was gifted a 29gal tank and was entertaining the idea of a seahorse tank. I know they’re a lot of work and I’m ready to take it on head first, however everything I’ve read has been the internet throwing basic facts about them at me and I wanted some personal experience type advice. What kinds of horses/how many/ how to set it up/ what they need specifically in the tank/ etc. thanks guys!

Most common seahorse is Hippocampus Erectus otherwise known as a lined seahorse. Most people recommend a thirty gallon for a pair however I have seen pairs in much smaller tanks and do just fine. The difficulty I think is overhyped with them as I know that I have had people at my store forget to feed them for a day and they do fine (Do not recommend doing this). The only time I have lost a seahorse was when I was running an airstone in a tank and if I had to guess air got in its pouch or something and it died as a result.

They really aren't that difficult and they don't shy away from your turkey baster when you try to feed them. Its good to have a spot in the tank where they can get out of the light like having an arch made of live rock and that is where mine have spent most of their time. I have fed nothing but mysis and small bits of krill with no issues (I have read that some frozen mysis needs added supplements or just aren't adequate) but I have not had any problems. They prefer colder water but I once had a heater break and the water tank was 86 degrees when I found out and the seahorse didn't seem stressed. I keep them at 78 degrees in the store (again not recommended but they do fine). Do not use any heavy flow but a light flow through the tank is fine.

As for other species of seahorse I have no experience with them so someone else will have to answer
