2nd large massacre in 2 months

I agee with @Hitman. I can't think of a disease/parasite that would kill inverts and fish, especially that quickly. It has to be either a toxin or oxygen depletion. Buy an inexpensive powerhead and point it so it ripples the surface. Keep us updated!

With your FX 4 Do you have a Surface skimming mechanism , Return blowing across the Surface of the tank or any other Mechanical way to Help with Gas exchange .
I think if you have Calcium that high. No gas exchange at the surface and NO Oxygenation in your filtration system (Canister filters are closed ) Large number of High energy fish in a 54g tank . There is prob not 1 thing that is the issue its a Combination in my opinion...

A canister filter cant run a tank on its own. You need In TANK Circulation. Surface skimming and Surface agitation
Sorry to hear about your loss in Marine Life. I take it very serious taking care and its always sad when we loose something. Also tangs can agitate each other and be stressed without showing signs of fighting.. Our tangs have a On and off Relationship. We have 4 fairly large ones. But they have A lot of room to get away from each other , Hide and Defend themselves without becoming stressed ..

Did you ever see the tangs backing up to each other. They do NOT Bite they sword fight with there scalpel by backing up to each other. (There TANG) .

Good Luck

I think it’s lack of O2 as there was next to no water aeration.
I second this.. lack of strong water movement and a few big fish like tangs. Any type of bacterial bloom would knock anything that requires O2 out.

Definitely need some power heads going forward.

Did you ever go fallow after the spots on the clown in February?

Did you ever add more live rock after your aquascape question thread?

I think low flow, heavy bioload, lingering parasite, inadequate rock for hiding, too many/active/territorial fish left your livestock on the brink, and it wouldn't take much to push them over the edge.

Please reevaluate your stocking levels, fish selection, and husbandry practices before you engage in setting up a larger tank. Plan it all out, stocking list first. Take input to ensure you provide an environment your desired livestock will thrive in, or revise your stocking plans before you build. The community will help you with this, it is a valuable resource. Everyone here wants you to succeed.

Happy reefing.

I have a hang on the back protein skimmer (octopus) I think.... sorry currently 4 manhattans in for the evening.
And the tank had slight bubbles from that.
Also 1 of the 2 outlets was pointed up, creating a large ripple on the water surface.

I don’t know. Maybe a blessing in disguise.

Marine velvet can cause fish deaths very quickly...

But nobody is commenting on multiple tangs in a 50g? I’m so confused
Yeah, it’s not a good situation for gangs but I think that point has been made.

When he says "the other 3 fish at tang point" I think was a typo. I thought too at first that he was referencing another tang.

Eh honestly it disappeared after the next day. The blood shrimp wasn’t to interested and the Clown was fine. Didn’t show signs of aggravation or heavy breathing.
I chalked it up to it irritation from the live rock honestly

No. I stuck with the original 35 or so lbs. although I was asking for help on how to make it nicer and more appealing. As it looked/s very bland

It could very well be that ...

Just got home from a night away.
Tank was at 69.3 degrees , the light for the heater was on and slight shock when I stuck my hand in. AND the gfci outlet in the basement was blown ( not sure that has ANYTHING to do w anything) But ....

I'd say that's the prime culprit right there. Not to say other possible issues mentioned by others didn't add to the stress, but a rapid temp drop (over hours instead vs days) can be brutal on tropical fish. While not necessarily lethal, 69 deg. is pretty low. If the malfunctioning heater let the temp drop even lower on other occasions, it would explain the quick deaths.

If it let the temp get really low, then kicked back on a heated the tank up quick again, it'd be even more lethal.

No bigger red herring in this hobby than stray voltage. That fish and inverts died means either oxygen deprivation or some kind of contamination.

so just as an update - my GSP and my Elegance Coral are doing well in my buddies 150g tank.
no issues w/ them at all... apparently they're still happy and all :)
he is holding them for me for the time being, and will return after I finish the basement and get the new tank.
---
the basement is a total disaster area currently, and that project needed to stop, as my wife is giving birth to our 2nd around thanksgiving... so - this hobby has been put on hold.
- the 54g is still running currently - well- at least the filter is still running; no livestock left and the lights arent on any longer; need to tear down the tank one of these days... but - life is a little packed currently and unfortunately not that high on the honey-do list

Update #2.5 -
I’m setting up the corner tank once again.

I got about 35 lbs of new dry rock
Very porous

Drained 90% of the water
Waiting on a new heater and going to let it run up to temp for a while , and re - cycle.

Also - looking at a power head too.

Maybe this time will be different:)
