I have been fighting an issue with diatom Algea (yes, I am sure it is diatom) I found the problem. I wasn’t measuring TDS in my RODI water... I am now (I am also keeping an extra set of filters on-hand now) I’d like to finally put an end to this algea.

How much stress will I cause my tank if I do a 3 day black out?

I would personally not do a 3 day blackout for diatoms. Now that you have identified the silicate source I would give it time with CUC and water changes. There are products that bind silicates also you could run for a couple days

It shouldn't. I generally do 5 days. You can run blues at 5% to offer coral a little light but NO whites. Add 1ml of peroxide at night per 10 gallons. Will assist in dino breakdown. Clean filters daily also.

If they're not hurting anything, you could also just let them run their course. Now that you've cut off their food source their time is limited.

Agreed with Hydro. I wouldn’t do a blackout for diatoms either. I know it’s ugly but with CUC and time it will subside. Especially since you found the source, a couple of water changes with clean water wouldn’t hurt either!

I do weekly water changes religiously: )

I did the 3 day blackout.
It spiked my ammonia...
It worked for 2 days.
Use Dr. Tim’s Waste Away liquid and then use the Gel for monthly maintenance, also use with a good CUC. Good luck!

You should be fine with a 3 day blackout, it’s just like a storm in the ocean

Just shut the curtains and doors and turn the lights off.
