3 days of darkness questions

Like I said, I know it's not exactly the same but 3 days of darkness will not harm your corals...have you done it? Because I have, multiple times & I have a 46gallon full of corals, never lost 1 piece due to a 3 day black out....like i said I'm sure others will weigh in

The fact that you've had to do it multiple times speaks for itself ;)

I'm talking over the course of 4 years(current reef) and I think someone else earlier in the thread stated they have considered doing it regularly & at one point earlier in my current reef's "life" I was doing that..... Tyler, how long has your tank been up & running?

Ok guys, pretty much think thats runs its course, how about back to the OPs questions.
He's planning on doing the lights out, and is also planning on running GFO in the tank while this is happening, so as to eliminate any phosphate problems coming out of the lights out. I personally think this is a great idea, and he should not have any issues doing this.

It sounds like people are about half and half on this idea. I don't believe I have a ton of excess nutrients so I will try the 3 days with no light. I will put fresh GFO in now before the time starts and when I'm done I will do a water change and then fresh GFO again. I don't have a ton of sps, mostly Lps. Hopefully I don't Kill any coral but as far as I'm concerned the hair algae will eventually take over the tank and possibly kill coral by growing over it. So I might as well give this a shot and see if it works. Thanks for all the advise. I will report back how it goes

Just keep an eye on the alk . GFO can deplete this . All in all it may balance out since the consumption should drop with no photo period .

So I'm on day three of lights out. I will turn the lights in sometime tomorrow. I looked at the tank with a flash light and I can still see algae that looks alive. Hopefully it all dies off by tomorrow. I scrubbed as much as I could off before I started but couldn't get it all.

Could u share a pic of what this algae looks like ? I think it may help to know what ur dealing with . Nuisance is kinda broad ,if you know what I mean

It's hard to see and is hard to get a good image off with all the lights out. There is a few little patches of brown stuff on the sand and green hair algae on the sand

Not sure ,Cuz I can't make it out too well. Is the algae feathery ?
Brown patches on the sand is somehting else .
In the first pic I do see some feathered algae . I wanna say it's bryopsis . There's like 7 different types of it .
IME the lights out will do nothing for it .

In my experience in keeping saltwater tanks (over 20 years) I have formed a hypothesis. I'm not going to write a book this morning, so, we all know to limit excess nutrients and to have some sort of nutrient removal (regular water changes, aggressive skimming, or better, growing macro algae, also.) To make this short and sweet, my concern is detritus related. What I call the "vicious cycle", dead algae = detritus = more algae. What's important now that you have dead algae is detritus removal. Create lots of flow in your tank, step up your small water changes, syphon out all detritus you can get to. We all know that algae problems are directly related to poor maintenance. I know this because I am just a guilty as anyone else.

I just turned on my blue lights. The water is crystal clear. It is hard to tell if there is any surviving algae. I will see in the next couple days if any grows

Keep your GFO running, til you know you've got no phosphates left in there. Don't let it get exhausted. But good to hear it came out good. Hows that skimmer looking??
