Does it matter on what size pellets or grains you get

to some extent, yes. Also what type of activated carbon. size and type affect efficiency. I'll see if I can find the BRS info on this which has a comparison chart. While not the most efficient, i am happy with the marineland stuff I get at the local pet smart.

Anyone uses carbon to get clear water?
Yes I use the Bulk Reef ROX 8
It works to polish the water for that crystal clear look.
It also removes toxins (organic compounds) that can enter your tank from corals or water sources.
It will not remove trace elements or ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate.
It is nice to have on hand even if you dont run it.
If you need to medicate your tank it can be used to remove those meds, (if the manufacture recommends removing them).
You wont need much in a small tank.

I use these in the BRS reactor. They are pellets, and stay in place nicely; not a lot of dust, and I think they are a good value for the money. The 100-once will last you a good long time.
