I had a breeding pair of percula clowns (female true, male false) in my tank doing well for years. One day, approx 2/3 months ago I notice one day the male is no longer around and despite my best efforts I can't find him. A little annoying but I have a good cleanup crew so it's possible that the crabs 'disappeared' him. I go to my LFS and get a replacement as, with any good reef keeper, I projected my feelings on to my fish and assumed the female was lonely. All goes well and both clown fish cozy up to each other.
All was going well until yesterday when I'm doing an overdue cleaning out of my sump when who do I find but the original male in the smallest section of my sump swimming against the flow from the down pipe. Tough SOB was there for around 3 months catching whatever food fell down the overflow after him!
So initially I'm delighted my fish didn't die but now I have an issue of 3 clown fish and one tank. 1 male who used to be in a pair with the female and the other in a newly mated pair. The 'sump' clown fish initially swam up to the pair but the, I guess rival, male pushed him away. Interestingly I have a little ******* of a yellow tail damsel who immediately harassed the 'sump' clown but the female clown has started stepping in to protect him. Tho neither of the pair will let the 'sump' clown into their area.
What I'm really looking for is advice on what to do next, does anyone think my 2 males have a chance of getting along or if I don't remove one will one be 'disappeared' by the other, but this time for real. My display is 300L with a few areas they could hang out in but not a enough I'd be sure they could ever really be apart. I'm tempted to get another small tank for 'sump' clown, the tough SOB might deserve a good life but I'm never convinced by nano tanks with fish in them.
Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.
