so me and my wife are looking to buy a 300 gallon FOWLR tank to start off with and then convert it to a reef tank and i need some info on what kind of things i need to buy to start out i.e. what kind on protein skimmer???? we already have a 55 gallon freshwater tank but i want to have a more colorful tank...

i would suggest looking at the build threads. There you will see people's actions and reactions to the setup of their new tanks. My new favorite skimmer is the Vertex Alpha Cone.

I always ran a Coralife Super Skimmer on my 72 & that is what we used at the shop I used to work at, but they're pretty temperamental pieces of equipment from what I've heard... but then again, it's all I know.
I am about to order a CPR Bak Pak skimmer for my 46 gallon that I am setting up; I have heard great things about them!

Good luck on your tank, though! 300 gallons would be a wonderful tank size to have; I am jealous! : )

well we have been thinking about it and maybe we might start with a 150 because we havent had a saltwater tank yet and the money is another thing and we are just now about to buy a house

Welcome! Start with a 150 then use it as your sump for the 300 when your ready.

funny thing you say start with a 150 because i just bought a 150 gallon off craigslist today for $100 with a stand and i thimk it will definitely do for a while

I wouldn't use it. It's too risky. the damaged area can become worse even after fixing it. A saltwater flooded house would suck so much! One thing with used tanks is that you should ask the seller to fill the tank up before you come and pick it up to check for leaks in order to prevent this from happening.

Are there bubbles at the seems? Or is it the bead of silicone leaking? Silicone easy to fix seams not so much and too risky like stated above.
