300 Gallon SPS Tank

I'm going to continue to post weekly progress pictures, along with other pictures of the build in between!

Hi David,

I am looking at getting a similar sized tank from Custom Aquariums. Curious what you think of the H2O overflows and stealth box? Are you seeing bubbles and in turn salt creep coming from the Siphon Stopper units? Is there much noise from the H2O overflows themselves? What is your opinion of the tank and stand now that you have had it a year and a half?
Thanks,
John

Hey John,

Nothing but positive things to say. No salt creep issues with siphon stoppers. Stealth box has never had issues - forgot what that even was at first when reading your question. Way back over a year ago it had the toilet flushing sound a little, but after tweaking the plug on the top that went away ever since. No leaks or anything. Canopy/stand are good - no problems there either. I'm glad I got a slightly taller stand since it lets me fit more stuff in there. I wish I would have gotten more than two overflows though - one more would be awesome for improving turnover. You can get three overflows on one stealth box, mine just has two. The sump system is good - mine is a sock tub into refugium into baffle tank where the return pumps/heaters go. My only constant problem with the entire system is the reef octopus skimmer, but that has nothing to do with the aquarium or stand/canopy. Let me know any other questions you have - can take pictures of anything you are interested in seeing.

Thanks for your reply David.

By my calculations with your 4 Sicce return pumps, after head loss; your pushing around 2,000+ gal/hr through your sump. I am curious what the water level in the external is from the top of the external box. Also would you tell me the difference in height between the water levels in the tank and the external box? This tank will be in my dining / living room and my wife has a low tolerance for "water" noise. (I currently have a HOB overflow on by present 180 g tank which receives complaints all too often). What is the distance between the tank water level and the top of the tank? Finally, I think I read you adjusted the siphon stoppers. Was this vertically? Thanks for the insight. Greatly appreciated.

Yea, 2000/gallons per hour sounds about right. Their website says 2400 gal, but I think that is max theoretical type numbers without head loss, like you factored in. That ends up being 6.6x turnover an hour, but I thought some people shoot for 10-12x on mixed reef aquariums. (More of a question than a statement)

I'll check out the noise on the stealthbox tomorrow when at the office. From what I remember it is virtually silent. If I had to guess, at least 60% of my noise comes from the reef octopus skimmer, then 30% from the return pumps and 10% from other pumps (ca, carbon reactor). I cut down a lot of the noise from the return pumps by wrapping them in an oxo dish mat to minimize vibrations.

The stealth box was probably my biggest fear when I saw what that thing looked like. I thought for sure it would leak or overflow behind the aquarium, but never. I don't even have the little lid they include sitting on the unit - just open on the top. The skimmer though... I hate the skimmer with a passion. I had to hook up the overflow tubing on the skimmer cup to a tall mug and set an ecotech water sensor in it to automatically **** the skimmer down when it goes crazy.

I'll check the heights for you. For now, if I had to guess I'd say the water sits a couple inches from the top of the stealth box.

Yes, now that you mention it I did adjust the siphon stoppers up a little bit. I think way back I had bubbles coming out of two of the stoppers and it was an easy fix to just move them up a hair.
