I am new to this forum and seeking some advice on a cool climate aquarium system (Not a reef aquarium). We are currently in the final stages of setting up aquaculture/cool climate aquariums for my school in Southern Australia and looking for some general feedback but, mostly after some advice on the cheapest lighting options.
This is a basic rundown of the system:
- Filtration system comprises a swirl filter, mechanical (gravel and sponge bucket filter), biofilter (K1 and aeration), and a sump
- Water is pumped from the sump into tank 1
- Tank 1 is purely for algae, seaweed, kelp, and bottom feeders (Crustaceans and echinoderms).
- Tanks 2 and 3 will house shellfish (oysters, muscles, scallops, and abalone) once the system has established.
- No fish will be added for at least 6 months
- The tanks and filtration system are tiered to increase the flowrate (currently running at 3000L/hr or 790G/hr)
Saltwater has just been added and the system is running smoothly for the past week. However, this is the largest system I have built/maintained and would appreciate any feedback you might have. I am also after suggestions for lighting; this has been constructed on a shoestring budget and we need the cheapest lighting possible that is capable of growing a full tank of algae and seaweed. These IBC tanks are 100x100x100cm (40inches) so light penetration will be a challenge.
Any feedback would be amazing.
