Hello everyone,

Starting my 300 gallon tank with 175 gallon sump. Drying out all the live rock and starting from scratch. This will be a reef tank with mostly LPS and some SPS. I want this tank to be dominated by tangs and wrasses. Going to start with tangs and wanted to see how many I can get away with and which types. I will have a 55 gallon QT tank that they will go in for 5 weeks before being put in DT. I will have very good water parameters as I will be dosing and using Apex to do weekly 10% water changes. Here are the fish that I know I want and would like to have. I plan on buying all fish small.

Dussumieri
Powder Blue
Powder Brown
Orange Shoulder
Sailfin
Blue Hippo
Clown Tang
Blonde Nasso
Purple
Yellow Eye Kole

Also will want
Wrasses's
2 Clowns
6 Anthias
Regal Angel Fish
Shrimp

I will start with 5-10 and then add slowly after that.

Thanks for the help

That's a lot of surgeonfish for a 300 gallon. I would recommend picking maybe 4-5 from that list and not much more. A few of those get large and some others get to be quite the bullies.

Agree, unless you meant to choose from that list. In which case I would do one purple, one yellow (maybe two), one sailfin, and either of the powders.

Read @4FordFamily 's article on Tangs. Very helpful as you consider which tangs you want. Once you decide post again and get advice on your Stocking order.
I have a 300 gal & like to make sure I have enough real estate for my larger fish (tangs) to hide or sleep (nice big caves etc.) without being crowded. This helps reduce stress as well. Good luck!

Some of those can live their whole life in a 300g tank. Powder blue & brown, kole, purple and maybe a chocolate would be a nice mix. I have had all of these and if not cramped and well-fed, they are good tankmates... but if you run out of room and underfeed them to keep the N and P down, then they will turn into complete ******s.

I really like the leopard wrasses and have 10+ in a 240g. Regal are hit/miss on eating your coral, but most are OK.

Some small versions of tanks are not too terribly hardy. Sometimes a 3" specimen is healthier than a 1" one.

Ok that list is very similar to the list i wanted for my 350. I'm gonna say the blue/brown combo didn't work. I tried everything. EVERYTHING to make it work. They are too similar. Blue finally killed him. Your gonna have to pick between those two and I'll say most browns seem to be nicer than the blues.

For reference I've got 1 blue, 1 sailfin, 1 blonde, 1 hippo, 1 orange shoulder, 1 mimic/chocolate, 1 kole

Every tank is different but I feel like I'm pushing the limits with aggression and it's all coming from the powder blue. And he's not the biggest tang in the tank by far.

I have had blues and browns in together and they were fine. Goldrim was in there too. Expect the worst with these guys... they are capable of it sometimes. What works for some does not work for all.

I had a clown once that was pretty nice, other than darting in/out of everywhere and spooking the fish. Grew really fast and I had to rehome it into a 2500g tank. Most clowns are holy terrors.

I really want
yellow eyed Kole
purple tang,
Sailfin tang
Powder blue
Clown
Orange shoulder

What do you think about that. Going to have lots of rock caves in display tank

I'd say get your wrasses first, then tangs last. I'd get like a very rare wrasse like pin tail fairy wrasse and make it a harem as your showfish/showfishes. Then id say 2 designer clowns, whatever tickles your fancy, then a purple, yellow eye kole, powder/achilles, vlamingi. Thatd make a dream tank for me.
