trying to decide if i should upgrade my filter im using the fluval 306 cannister filter on a 55gal tank. currently only has fish and rocks in it.

i don't really plan to make a sump for this tank since this tank is used and i have no where to really put my fish to drill holes and what not for a sump. i do plan to replace it with another tank the same size or slightly larger and put a sump on that but that could be a year or 2 from now at the least. so should i upgrade my filtration or is it good enough for this set up?

only really messy fish i do have is a green spotted puffer which i converted over the years but it is fairly small still at about 3 inches long. just trying to see where i can upgrade and what i can use for now until i save up more money.

You could look into external overflows if drilling is the only issue, but a canister will work, the issue being they have to be frequently cleaned and maintained. They don't aerate well and they are notorious for leaks. So you may want to look into running a HOB bare to help aerate, without the medium it's a good place to house purigen or reduction pads. The filter media in most HOB and canisters are known to be detritus traps. So frequent cleaning or replacing is something to stay on top of.

yea mine doesn't aerate much i've noticed and i can't really put much as HOB would have to remove everything because my tank it right up against my wall had trouble putting my HOB skimmer in. it doesn't leak at all this model but yea it does have lots of crap building up per week. trying to get away from HOB stuff it looks ugly imo.

do you think it will suffice for now though? im looking to get into sumps but on a new tank that isn't set up yet.
