32” overflow

Hello!

Today I placed an order for a 96x36x24 peninsula tank and I am trying to decide on the external overflow because I need to have it shipped to the builder.

In my head I had planned on the 32” exotic marine systems 1.5” overflow for this system, but will that leave enough room on both sides of the overflow for the returns with the 36” of width?

How many gph will you be running? Seems like overkill.

At least 2,000 gph. Sump I’m looking at is 58 gallons, and I won’t go smaller than that, so around a 400 gallon system. The 20” overflow is rated for less than 1200gph or I would go with that one.

You would likely need 1-1/2" bulkheads for 2000 gph. Even if you went down to 1" bulkheads I do not think you have enough room for a 32" when you consider the setback from the edge of the glass for the drilling. I would probably be looking for a 28" overflow (custom) with 1" bulkheads, but I don't think it will comfortably handle 2000 gph. I know you don't want to do it, but I would recommend backing off on your return flow to 1200-1600 gph with two 1" returns.

I also think a 58 gal sump will be challenged with 2000 gph.

Agreed. I'm pushing a 1" bean animal to the limits wide open full siphon and not hitting 2k

On a second thought, if you go over the top with 1" returns, you could probably make the 32" fit, but it will be very tight and depend on the rim construction.

Thank you everyone! I had a feeling the 32” wouldn’t leave room for the returns, so glad I asked before purchasing. I’m actually okay with 1200 gph flow rate. So the question now is, would the 20” with 1” drains, rated for 1200gph be okay for this system?

I'm a little late. 32" would only leave 2" on each side. I wouldn't be comfortable drilling holes so close to the edges.
