32G Brute Can Water Level Measurements

I haven’t been able to find this information anywhere. Here or Google. So I did it myself.

Sorry if this has already been posted. This is a rough estimate. I doubt it’s spot on accurate. But it’s darn close.

I filled up my 5 gallon bucket, about 2” below the rim, with RODI water and started filling my 32 gallon grey Brute trashcan in 5 gallon increments, and measuring the water level. The following is what I came up with

5G = 5”
10G = 9”
15G = 13”
20G = 16 3/4”
25G = 20 1/2”

***Please note that these measurements were taken by placing the measuring tape between the first ridge, and the outer wall of the inside of the 32 gallon grey Brute trash can. ***


Hopefully this helps anyone who has been wondering how much water their container is holding

I did the same thing with a 5 gal bucket that I actually made an exact 5 gal mark on. After each 5 gal in the brute, I etched a line on the inside wall under the handle on each side with an awl. I also etched in the number of gallons at each line. This way I can use one for waste water and one for fresh and know exactly how much to remove while fresh is mixing and heating in other.

I marked my storage as well on the inside. My next “to-do” is to do just what you did, and buy another 32G Brute so I can get my WC’s spot on. But dangit their expensive lol

I’m close to be getting rid of my 2 brutes soon, going to step up my water change station. Any one near Atlanta interested drop me a line

That is great, can you share the measurements?
 
Here's another idea I did when I was using the brutes. I picked up a piece of clear PVC pipe and a couple of uniseals. Installed on the outside of the brute, from the bottom to the top. Started by putting a measured 5 gallons of water. Marked the clear pipe with some black line tape. Put another 5 gallons in and marked it again. So every black line you see on the clear pipe is 5 gallons. Worked out pretty nicely.

This is what I got but they may be off a fraction as it's hard to see exactly down at the bottom.

5 gal - 5 3/16 (might be 1/4)
10 gal - 9 1/4
15 gal - 13 1/4
20 gal - 17 1/4
25 gal - 21 1/8
30 is the top of the curve on the handle sides
 
I just found it easier to use a 5 gal bucket with a measured 5 gallon mark and dump them in and scratch the line in. This way I am sure it's really close.

What size of uniseals did you use? Did you put the 90 right inside? Or pvc than 90
 
Not the smartest but I filled my brute can to a few inches below the top, there was a modeling inserts that I stopped at. I thought I bought a 35 gallon can but in any event, I guessed that it must be around 28 gallons isa so added 13 cups of salt, checked salinity I was closer than expected added one more cup and hit the salinity measurement.
 
Can't believe someone did this. I searched for this not thinking i'd find it. :D
 
This is how I did it. I have a 32 brute. The reason is I read somewhere 24 1/4 inches was 30gal. I added 15 cups of salt (instructions per company) and the salt was to high. I had been using these instructions for smaller batches and it was always right. So I got a gallon jug and marked a food grade bucket for every gallon. Then I used the bucket to fill container. I have included a tape measure in photo to show where I measured. This is not 100% dead on the money because I did not weigh every gallon or any water for that matter. I will say the salt to water ratio per instructions is 35 PPT. I think it depends on where you place your tape measure while measuring and that your measurement on your 5gal bucket is the same is why it is different for everyone. Also depends on the 5 gal bucket you use because all buckets does not have the same 5gal mark. Example lowes and home depot are different. Hope you find this useful info.


I am not saying anyone who posted measurements are wrong. I am simply stating that if your markings and mine arent the same we will come up with different numbers.

You can take this another route and do what I did. I installed a float valve on my brute to turn my RODI and trash water drain off. This gives me the water level from a "full" can based on where you install a float valve.

After that I calculated the salt to bring it up to where I wanted. 2550G of salt will bring my can up to 1.025.5ish (My eyes are not good enough to figure out if it is closer to .025 or .025 on my refractometer). Now I start making water by adding a pump and heater after a few inches of water are in the can and put in all the salt. I leave it run and it's mixed for me a few hours after the can is filled.

For the 5gallon bucket. If you are going to buy a food grade bucket anyway you can go to a brew shop and pick up one that is already indexed. That gamma lid must make a bear to pour out of.

The PVC pipe you used, was it hard or soft like pump tubing? If its hard where did you find it?
