hey guys i have a 32g reef tank fully stocked with a semi heavy bioload 2 clowns, 2 watchman gobies, damsel, housing a baby tank for a friend aswell are 5 gallon water changes weekly required or can bi weekly be done need some advice

I think weekly is recommended for sure, but if everyone on this forum was honest with themselves, you could probably do every 2 weeks in a pinch.

How long has the tank been up? If it is established you are more likely to have success with less water changes.

Worst case, try it for a little while and watch your parameters. If the tank does well with bi-weekly, stick to that. If it does not do well, go back to every week.

On R2R you will find people who do it weekly, monthly, and never depending on their specific situation.

I would say stick to weekly for a little bit longer then let the experimenting begin!

yeah you definitely right thanks for the info man

So it sounds like you’re trying to do less water changes so this may not really be all that helpful but i had the 45 gallon red reefer 170 tank with a healthy amount of fish and corals, and I’d do a single gallon a day. I had a cup that measured 1/4 gallon so I’d take 4 out, put 4 in....took a few min.

I got that advice from my LFS owner who had some of the best reef aquariums I’d ever seen and he explained that with smaller aquariums it’s very easy for water parameters to quickly shift and reef aquariums thrive on consistency.

Very glad I listened, Tank did awesome, had some easier SPS growing well in there and little to no water issues over the two years I had it.

My guess is your probably at 24 to 25 gallons after scape and equipment? You didn't mention what the actual volume is. There's so many factors involved when we discuss WC amounts and frequencies. If it were my tank I'd lower the bio load and try 3g a week. WC aren't my favorite either. No matter what kind or size tank I build I keep it simple in hopes of putting more success on my side. Low bio load, heavy filtration, heavy bio media, moderate par, and consistent maintenance. This recipe isn't for everyone but would probably allow you to end up with monthly changes at some point.

For a tank that size I would do about 4.5 gallons a week......

I use that number because I remove enough to fill a 5 gallon bucket minus enough to keep me from spilling as I haul it away.

Just keeping it simple
